agnostic - someone who believes that gods do not exist but is also a huge insecure faggot who doesn't want to look bad to their pleb theist friends, so they claim that they "can't know the answer and therefore neither believe or disbelieve in gods."

>>
>>710700425
Atheists do not "believe", rather, it is quite literally the lack of belief. There is no belief to begin with. What you would ascribe to an atheist as "belief" is in actuality an "assured confidence" in that something does not exist.

Hence why I am an Agnostic Atheist.

I am 99% sure that the thing that we would call a god, does not exists, but since I have yet to explore the entire universe, top to bottom, from left to right, and everything in-between along with the possibility of multiple dimensions, I cannot 100% say that there is no "God".

I'm up for a debate or thought provoking practice, as we are all here for the truth.

They can and do. Just because you fail to accept their definitions it doesn't mean they don't have then.

Why can't you define what faith is? You can't really, so don't even try. Even if you can define it for yourself it is inevitable that it will clash with someone else's definition, meaning you would have failed to correctly describe it.

Why can't you define what Faith is?

Isn't Faith the translation of what it means to believe in something without proof or fact?

Why would there be another definition?

And if another person defines what Faith is, how would it be the correct definition when the accepted definition is backed by more people?

Do definition exist as definitions because of the amount of people invested in them?

Agreed. They cannot, by usage of Logic and Reason, state with 100% certainty, that there is no "God".

Atheism: The desire and confidence that causes an human being to, based on an immense amount of facts already proven to be accurate by themselves, and in comparison with the lack of the proof of an universal explanation of the apparent intervention of supernatural phenomena in the everyday life, decide to choose to disbelief and disprove the possibility of such events to exist until being confirmed, analyzed and backed up by an irrefutable proof.

> Disbelief or lack of belief in the existence of God or gods.

>The only people with a lack of belief, i.e. absence of belief, are people who were born in the woods and never had contact with other people, and were never exposed to the concept of whatever religion and religious belief is in question.

>absence of belief

Quite wrong you are sir, you can indeed, have a lack of belief. The reason why atheism is defined as having a "disbelief" <--- more on that later--- rather than lack of belief, is this.

Disbelief assumes that there is something in question that is true. Disbelief, by nature of its definition, tells us that whoever came upon the evidence of said belief, is in disbelief of its evidence.

As of right now, there is no repeatable, solid, scientific evidence of a God.

There is a logical conclusion that there MAY be a god or what we would call a god, but no evidence that has been proven through logic.

Atheists say that they have a lack of belief because it is in their assured confidence that there is no proof. It is the core of Atheism.

Do atheists celebrate Christmas?
>>

But there is proof, if you jump you will come back down again. They've done multiple studies on the effects of gravity. You can't deny that gravity is a thing and that is effects us and the universe.
How does this relate to theism versus atheism though?
A scientist who was also a theist would still have a hard time explaining how god did it. Your point is kind of moot.
>>
>>
>>710707927
I still do because it's fun as fuck, and who doesn't want free stuff.

I just don't celebrate it as Christmas but ,rather, a gathering of family to exchange gifts of love.

>inb4 GAY
>>
>>
>>710707449
All this proves is that when you jump, you fall back down.
without an explanation as to how this effect is achieved, it could also be explained by the love of god drawing you closer to him.

>>

With that train of thought you could be JW.....
>>
>>
>>710708028
What he's trying to postulate is that although we know that Gravity is a thing, what we have proven thus far is wrong because Quantum Mechanics and the Theory of General Relativity cannot coe-exists, yet, they do.

We are missing a piece of the puzzle that combines the two is all that he is saying.
>>
>>
>>710708176
What the hell is a JW?
>>
>>
>>
>>710707927
Sure do, I mean Christians celebrate it and it's a pagan ritualistic party that predates Christianity being wide spread throughout the world. So why wouldn't we celebrate it?

So your saying a theist has as much evidence to prove this theory as the best scientist in the field.
And you take his word above theirs...based on..... Nothing but faith that science man is correct

So very scientific

Tide goes in, tide goes out, you can't explain that
>>

>>
>>710708566
I'm not saying it is, I'm saying that IT IS a new field to be explored in science, that we don't yet have all the answer to 99.9999% prove that gravity exists (although what we call gravity does due to our everyday anecdotal experience of it).

What the other anon did was counteract your argument with that of what a religious person would use, which is a nice way of helping you frame your counterargument against theirs.

What we're trying to explain, is this.

Gravity, as we know of it, as what we describe it, is all based off of the Theory of General Relativity along Quantum Mechanics. It has been proven, <--- proven, that neither can co-exist as there are gravitational anomalies that make the theory invalid.

Quantum Mechanics and the Theory of General Relativity co-exist, but with our observable evidence, it has shown that neither can co-exist together, yet, they do.

So there must be something that we're missing.

Something that links the two together.

"Tide goes in tide goes out" is his way of saying that although we see it happen, we cannot currently explain it with the Theories that we have today, and are currently missing more data that would help us prove its "existence".

Aww shit....I've been rumbled...
Someone finally sees the point.

My point is;
Most of what you assume is "Scientifically proven" is actually wrong, and will be proven as wrong in the fullness of time. (See 'degradation of facts') ...but with your incomplete knowledge you insist you are right..
A faith based zealot if you will.

Tide goes in, tide goes out...you can't explain that

The difference between a layman who believes in science and a religious zealot though, is that the layman will be convinced by and willing to believe new evidence, the zealot won't.

Because science has never held on to a theory that was wrong because their careers depended on it.
The only thing that keeps science advancing is the older generation dying off and their old/wrong ideas dying with them. The Maverick theory today, is the accepted theory tomorrow.
Who's to say tomorrow's theory isn't also wrong?

The thing that keeps science advancing is the thirst for progress and knowledge.

Old but right ideas never die off.

Wrong ideas do.

God is the only consistent truth, is not the consistent truth.

The only consistent truth is the search for one.

And one may exist as nobody has ever searched the entire universe.

Whatever is ascribed to be a god.

Whatever attributes that people place upon what a god is.

All or near-powerful.
All or near-omnipotent.
All or near-omnipresent.

The all powerful attribute has been refuted already.

Just two more to go.
>>
Fuck you that's why
>>
>>710711538
Why is a god needed though?
I'm not even trying to be facetious, I just don't get the need for a deity.
I've spent my entire life without one and I don't feel any sort of gaping hole in my emotional life.
>>
>>710711538
The mono-theist abrahamic interpretation of the definition of God...maybe .... But just as your explanation of gravity shifts under scrutiny , so too could God.

You are the one who has defined God by these terms...that's your 'belief'...it may not be the same for other people.
>>
>>710711853
Is a god needed?

It's in my belief as an Agnostic Atheist that there must have been something before the Big Bang.

That might be a "God", so in that sense, he is "needed".

But for everyday life I don't need him/her/it.

I used to be Christian. Prayed everyday when I went to bed for 10 years.

Started asking questions, looking into the forces of Logic and Reasoning, learning Philosophy and the proofs behind them.

Only then did I break the chains that held me in fear... only then did I become happy.

I described what I believe as a god as;

All or NEAR-powerful
All or NEAR-omnipresent
All or NEAR-omnipotent.

The mono-theistic abraham interpretation of the definition does not hold that whatever "God" may be as being "near" powerful.

They ascribe to him that he is ALL powerful, omnipotent, omnipresent etc.

I ,myself, ascribe to whatever "God" may be as NEAR powerful etc. etc.

God should come under scrutiny. All things should come under scrutiny.

And you are right, my definition of what a "God" may be could be radically different than other peoples' definition.

We are just searching for different things and meanings, that's all.

I hope they find them.

That something might've been a big rip, which would make the universe a cyclical entity. Although that doesn't explain how that cycle got started.
I've often wondered at what value people found in religion, what I tend to meet is a lot of guilt and rules that seem to state the obvious.
Like the do not kill commandment. It seems fairly obvious to me that if I don't want to get killed, I shouldn't be killing other people.
>>
>>710712827
I find value in;

-the music of the religious Choirs, in all religions.
-the thought provoking and silent atmosphere in most religions.
-the examination of what might've started this whole shebang.

And yeah, I've had similar experiences.
Most people tend to follow that religion purely out of fear, guilt, hope.

Hope isn't as bad of a reason, but why find hope in religion when you can find it in scientific progress?

Shit, that's the whole reason I'm majoring in Prosthetics.

To hopefully gain immortality, but in the process of doing so, helping many people replace lost limbs so they can lead a more pro-active life.

The term I was searching for was "The half-life of facts";
"Half of what scientist may have known about a particular subject will be wrong or obsolete in 45 years"

But keep insisting that what you currently believe is 100% true and those who disagree with you are morons... Who cares what the truth is? Certainly not high-minded atheists

Here we go again...

You cannot say, with 100% confidence, that they're no God[s], as you have not explored the vastness of the universe yet. For all we know, he/she/it could be hiding out in the edges of space. Logic dictates this notion.

I highly doubt that we'll ever completely explore the universe though.

On the other hand, a lot of the greatest buildings and monuments in the world involved the starvation and hard work of some people. We wouldn't have all these things to aspire to if people didn't make sacrifices in the past to have them built.
I guess it was also a distaste for the dogmatic that colored my view of the Vatican.

I'm pretty sure the fact that all of actual recorded history has totally lacked the divine intervention or divine presences found in all stories of the divine is proof enough.

Nothing divine has happened in thousands of years. And that's because we've long passed the day and age where a charismatic storyteller's fairy tales could convince people of a magical events. Just look at the new religions. Mormons were founded in 1830 and most people think they're insane. Scientology was created in 1954 and EVERYONE thinks they're insane. But they're the same level of made up bullshit as the old dominant religions.

The only difference is that the old dominant religions believe their own hype and decry the new religions for being false. They forgot that some ignorant tribesmen basically made all that old testament shit up and then it got sequels. Hinduism is in the same boat. All those stories about Brahman and Shiva and the other gods doing stuff and now... nothing. Nothing for thousands of years.

The notion that your chosen religion's god(s) are powerful enough to create the planets and stars, fuck around with human history for a while, then vanish and hide, is nothing but a hilarious delusion you tell yourself to avoid admitting that it doesn't make any sense at all that Yahweh or Allah or Odin or Zeus or Brahman have all done precisely NOTHING in the modern era when they were all king shit ultimate rulers over nature in their respective lores. Every culture of humanity invented their own super being(s), and none of them were real, because all of them were just stories.
