Has anyone here failed/dropped out of college? Hows life been since you left school?
>>
I'm a disgrace to my family and myself and everyone around me thinks that I've wasted all the opportunities I had in life and that I deserve this.

I still get to live & game while doing absolutely nothing so its ok.
>>
didn't go to college and instead spent my time educating myself with technical training (IT)

College isn't required, don't let people tell you that. It's just a part of the system that makes the world go round and round. of course they want you to be indebted to the institution.
>>
>>710130671
Dropping out of college was the single most responsible financial decision I ever made in my life. Really wish I had gotten that dust collecting piece of paper tho, even tho I've never had to show one at any interview I've ever had
>>
>>710130972
Hows your job?
Does it pay well?
>>
I kinda dropped out for the most part although I did take 1 class this semester. I don't have the patience or motivation to spend tons of money on college and sit in a boring class all day. I got a job in the field I was studying anyway (IT) and I'm doing pretty good so far. I work as a systems administrator in a datacenter. I plan to just climb the latter.

as a manager that hires, i can tell you i'll not consider you over somebody with a degree. tho in healthcare, this is to be expected
>>
>>710130671

Me. I've been on and off college for more than a decade now. Currently working from home as a glorified virtual assistant.

Pay's more than enough to get me by and buy me good stuff like a car and a mid-tier gaming PC, but aside from that, I don't see a career ladder in my future. College is still the best way to open up good opportunities.

Also, the prestige of having a degree makes it easier for you to socialize. People have an easier time measuring you up when you're a professional, i.e. attorney, doctor, engineer, etc. No need to explain what you do for a living and its significance to society.
>>
>>710131108
incredibly easy. there's a lack of IT workers in the states right now, it's why there's so many fucking h1b indian imports.

Interestingly enough, some ppl here at my office actually did get their degrees. Only difference between us is their degree is collecting dust on the wall behind them and they're in debt. I'm not.

I got fucked over in scholarships cuz the office kept delaying registering me, yet allowed me to take classes for two years while the website made it look like I was getting a full ride with my grants and shit.

So I was basically forced to drop out when 2 years of private college debt came crashing down on me all at once because "Well Mr. Anon, it says you were never fully registered as a student (I went through that shit SIX TIMES and each time I was told everything was good in the end) so your scholarships/grants don't apply to the classes that you took! We need the money, now."

All in all 2 years later, I've got a decent job, a girlfriend, my own place, and probably a house soon.

"Dropping out" only sucked when I didn't know that there were other options. Don't give up, anon.

dropped out of college due to not really going anywhere with it. didn't enjoy my major and had no desire to major in anything. decided to join a trade school, as i'm a very hands on person. I love it

I wasn't ready for college right out of high school, and it's perfectly fine if you don't succeed in college. It happens. I started working for a landscaping company and made a shit ton before they canned me for a bullshit reason.

College can be a scam... or it works well. I graduated, found work in my field (that requires a degree) and make 85k + pension and benefits. Wife is stay at home with the baby, car is paid for, and house payment is easy. Student loan debt is down to $4k.

Going to college to 'find yourself' or get an unmarketable degree is a life crippling mistake. Using college to get into a field with barriers to entry isn't bad.

Honestly I really didn't get much out of college. Granted it was a community college full of niggers but I got my 2 yr degree and am making $100k + more than likely for the rest of my life.

All in all college is worth it, I went to community because I didn't know what I wanted to do when I graduated high school so I just went in and took a few classes towards what I do now. Found it interesting enough and graduated with 0 debt thanks to scholarships but even if I had debt it would have been paid in a year or 2.

Got a real job, like a man. Pour concrete. Starting pay is much higher than something stupid like cashier/cook, then get learnt and prove it-money goes up fast. Even further down the road your own company? Retarded amounts of money, while you watch everyone do the work. Or don't even watch, still millionaire.

basically the same as this poster. but learned a few things in college and dropped out, as i realized i didn't want to do graphic design and instead went into technical posistions instead. started in tech support, then database support, then programming that database support into an automated web interface. now im working directly with the owner of the company doing billing and financial audit systems.

i work from home, i started a small retail business on the side which i do front desk stuff two days a week. i have a girl a daughter and a dog, but only rent a house as i don't want to live in the desert for the rest of my life.

Yeah I think total it took me like right at 3 years to get my degree and graduated in December. Hired on at a plant where my dad worked and my brother used to work before it split into $29 BASE pay. With full benefits 401k matching and a pension.

Yet I have friends going to uni to graduate and come out making 40k a yr. I just don't get that.

College is the opposite for me in Cali. I put that I'm poor, that I need assistance and they pay me 20,000 a year to attend. That's cash other money pays off my class and reduces parking permit cost.
You get a degree, you can learn a new trade anytime in life and it's free. Can't say college has been all bad. Oh and my grades are passing nothing special really.

Don't go to college unless you plan on getting a bachelor's or better, and don't go for business unless you plan to get your MBA.

I can't tell you how many people get degrees for jobs they could have got with a certification.
Also, the market is glutted with people with degrees. I just put out an add for a receptionist, and more than half of the applicants have an associate's or bachelor's degree in something.

>asshole attitude.
granted that college and the public education isn't for everyone, just because you drop out doesn't mean you're an unsuccesful person. however, educated people aswell as dropouts can equally fall into shit life situations and shit paying jobs. The job-market is always relative and ever changing. today engineering is popular in 10-15 years labor workers will be much more valuable and needed, cause too many fucking engineers planning ahead instead of just getting shit done.

I dropped out of college, taught myself software engineering, and I'm now 24 making $140k and looking like I'm going to get a raise of ~$15k during annual reviews this December after less than a year at this company. I have no student debt, paid it all off.

How?!?!?!

1. I dropped out of ART school. Shit was worthless, but thankfully also didn't put me in too much debt.

2. I am a self-taught software engineer, BUT I also had rich relatives willing to float/house me while I was learning, which I took fucking seriously. I followed MIT's CS curriculum, bought textbooks, spent at least 6-8 hours every day practicing code. It was not easy, but not worrying about rent or food made it infinitely easier.

3. I had a lot of connections. My first salaried job didn't even involved being interviewed or screened, which I definitely would have failed at the time. I was also super lucky that it was a low-risk, isolated prototyping role so my fuck ups never meant anything.

4. I have serious Impostor Syndrome. Have been working as dev for 3 years now, I'm a Senior Engineer, I interview candidates, mentor junior devs, etc... but in my mind I'm still waiting for everything to come crashing down and someone to call me on my bullshit. Even though rationally I realize I've actually become a pretty competent programmer, this fear drives me to overachieve and obsessively learn anything I realize I don't already know. It's stressful, but it's good motivation.

>Pull in passive 60,000 with it
>Work at a bank making $26.55/hr during the day.

Already paid off my debt but it was worth finding out what wasn't in the cards for me. don't dropout without a plan and don't dropout with a negative attitude for having done it.

GL
>>
>>710130972
Like job experience, you're right, it's not exactly a requirement. It is better however since it gives you a degree which is a tangible reference of your abilities.

Most advanced positions in any field require a degree though, unless you're Bill Gates or some shit.
>>
Technically I'm a dropout because I never filed the paperwork for the diploma, even though I finished all the classes. Honestly I'm an eccentric but very talented film director who knew college would be a waste of time but was forced to by my Mom. I graduated high school in 09, when finding a minimum wage job was near impossible. I couldn't find a feasible way to support myself.

Honesty I'm much happier now being a housecleaner, scrubbing toilets to save up for the short film that'll get me into prestigious festivals. College students are like crabs in a bucket and nothing is worse in this world than college short films.
>>
Was deeply depressed toward the end of high school and beginning of college. Hated my life, dreaded every moment of the loneliness. Despised the pressure of the full ride scholarship I had. Had little friends, turned to none in college when two girls I spent like every day with both dropped out. Was really considering killing myself before I finally just decided to step back and then out. Family was very unhappy with me for a while but they grew to understand.

Now I'm oilfield trash, but I'm married, have my own house, a new car, a couple dogs. Shit ain't perfect but I'm much happier than I was.

I dropped out my sophomore year. Took a year off to live with some sketchy punk kids and smoke weed and drink. Did odd jobs on craigslist for rent and booze money. It was awesome.

After a year of that I realized I needed to get my shit together, so I studied for and passed the A+, Network+ and CCENT exams to get a helpdesk job. Clawed my way up from there over the next 10 years, got a RHCE, CCNA, MCSE, and a ton of experience.

Now a Senior Systems Engineer for a financial company pulling down 140k a year. Not bad for a drunk asshole with no degree. Do recommend.

so many anons throwing out big numbers,

basically earning more than most civil-engineers whilst doing lowgrade jobs.

for the record, i do believe people should be judged on their skill, if that is infact self taught or from the education system, i just seriously doubt you'd get through to an easy good paying job just like that. Now some posters in here are probably telling the truth, however i do call bullshit on most stories posted in here.

It may be hard to understand, but tradespeople actually get paid well here in Canada.

Especially when you work in a camp job, like the oilsands. I make 42.55/hr plus benefits and RSP/pension matching etc etc.
>>
>>710136060

why did you choose software engineering tho. most of what you have done does not really require that much connections and supports from family.

>>710136954
For me, getting to that point took longer than the guys who had the degree really. Not coder but I dropped and just worked hard while I watched people my age with degree make more up front. In the long run I've passed many of them. It's a combo of luck, right place at right time, not being a complete asshole and knowing how to network well.

I've found the older I get it is more about who I know than my complete skillset.
>>
>>710130671
Practically every nonshit job requires a college degree and you'll be competing against college graduates. As well, even if you get hired, you'll soon be replaced by a college graduate. Unless you start your own business, be prepared to be poor for life. Don't fucking expect to get your grubby mooching hands on my wallet, either, filthy libturds.

That being said, I teach at university, and the dumbfuckery amazes me. You can easily glide through most schools to a BA and know fuck all nothing.
>>
>>710136954
noone said it was easy. after dropping out i did absolute shit jobs for shit pay just to build up a resume.
and i don't get paied 140K and don't know anyone that does that just being a programer.

the advantage of having a degree is that mostly you don't need to "prove yourself" to get the interview since the degree supposedly is an indication that you are worth something

I just realized that the college experiences I may have missed were directly replaced by the amazing fun ski resort lifestyle I lived for a few years.

Okay, I officially regret nothing.
>>
>>710130671
I was shoehorned into college thanks to a scholarship and my family. I decided "Hey, why not?" I had no idea what I wanted to do or be so I thought college would give me some inspiration. Short version, it didn't and I developed depression out of it. One day I decided I was fed up and declared to my family that I was dropping out and wanted to focus more on work. I mean why force myself to stay when I'm not happy, right? My family was shockingly understanding about the whole thing, even though in previous years they all would guilt me about it constantly.

Anyway, working in an office, I can finally afford everything I need. Life is pretty ok.
>>
>>710137070
Not every school in the ghetto will put up the funding or staff needed to coordinate with a program like that.

I'm not saying it's impossible I'm saying the privileged have it much easier in choosing to drop out and pick up a trade from scratch.

We have the time and money and then once we're successful we parade it around like "we started this IT company in garage so anyone with enough will can do it!"

That's such bullshit.

dumb fuck. us firms will reject us applicants to 1) drive down salaries in the it industry by causing a glut of us coders desperate for work 2) then claim to congress that there is a dearth of qualified us born it workers, so they authorize more h1b visas to bring in cheap labor overseas thereby further suppressing salaries for it workers inside the us.

the "lack" of qualified us it workers is a lie

Dropped out of high school because I was so behind. ADD and anxiety made it hard as fuck, it was over 20 years ago.

Got a ged and tried school but still couldn't do well because i didn't know how to learn. Went to the army which was perfect for me because it was so physical it burnt up my extea energy, then i could study. Did the medic course at Fort Sam, then after army stuff the timing right, i got so curious about medicine that i went to nursing school got the Lpn, then the RN, then the Bsn.

Making 80k working night/weekend program. Grad school in the fall. Sometimes you have to do a pace that works for you. Are you in the right major?
>>
>>710137257
same experience here. a lot of shit jobs working hard to get where I am now.

Not fun but I don't have student loan debt so there is that.
>>
Failed the first year, parents stormed in and got all the classes retroactively dropped. Failed the second year, parents made me transfer to a shittier college.

Did amazing, transferred to an excellent school, am still doing amazing.

The lesson here is you're allowed to flunk as long as your parents have the money. I'm a giant fuckhead but I learned my lesson, and as long as I keep on doing well my life will turn out fine.

>>710137236
That's how I got my bachelors /b/ro

Not gunna lie, I'm basically a waste to society atm
I dormed all my 4 in university, I got hooked on vices on the first year with my frat
How did get the money to do this.... Parents
I mostly never did any of my assignments because I got friends to do them, and I'll would smoke them out
It was fun while it lasted
Most likely will join the military to find a path

2 more jobs, around 15 interviews later and nobody has asked for proof of graduation, I don't even put my "degree" on my resume. HR takes shortcuts wherever they can on recruiting. If they see you've worked in the field they're 95% not going to check your educational background at all.

might also be due to your resilience to get further ahead where as the others might have settled to a life of having a job that is decent within their interests and then focus on the family life.

like i said ofcause there's gonna be people doing well and become succesful, but there's probably alot that wont succeed to that kinda lifestyle of being a "dropout"

the biggest fault of the education system is that it's too fuckin old and cannot keep up with the very individual ways of learning and mastering subjects.

i guess because i slacked off did the wake, jerk off, eat, jerk off again or vidya, contemplate suicide until i fall asleep.

i say stick with school if it's a good college/uni
or drop out be a responsible adult and do something productive dont follow my tracks
i dont have a job, no useful skills or abilities, no friends and finally a virgin, great job to me.

dont drop out unless you know your shit and have a fool proof plan

god i wish i can go back to being in pre school again

believe it or not anon your type of work requires more skill than most of us have
i am considered to be very smart but i am also completely useless with my hands so even if i could get the education required to know how a diesel engine works exactly i would not be able to apply that knowledge to the physical world. software is different as it is easier in this manner
>>
>>710132225
Just because they are in college does not make them smart. Saw plenty of horrible students that couldn't wait to go to graduate school as if they were destined to go. Meanwhile I did Electrical Engineering and Mathematics with a 4.0 and a Physicist girlfriend. Still looking for something local that I enjoy that utilizes my college knowledge because I get to design things and apply math to my hobbies at home like juggling, cubes, yoyo, drugs, etc.>>710132225
>>
>>710138458
This is important. Being a mechanic definitely requires more skill than programming.

The only difference is the current demand for each skill.
>>
>>710138074
I agree. I think dropping out and ending up doing well is rare. I consider myself lucky.

I didn't get married and have kid until much later because I wanted to focus on career.

Public schools here are a mess and years behind. I mentor kids in my area (low income) and there isn't a lack of motivated kids, it is the system teaching them that is fucked.
>>
>>710138074
Yeah well there's no substitute for hard working in the end. You don't get to write term papers or reports but you do have to do some extra works for self PR beside teaching yourself cs.

some people start with lower grade job even if they sort of over-qualifies for their technical skills. some people like me already have some connections and experience from working with open source guys and works out well.

amen to that brother, denmark might be the happiest country or whatever we're trying ot act out to the world but our school/gymnasium(highschool+college)/uni system is so liniar and obsessed with getting highend exam grades for their excel sheets rather than teaching students different ways of learning and essentially let them master their courses by using their own way of learning.

don't kill the curiosity about a subject/major/course, open it with a question and let students wonder, dont give them to fucking answer.

Yeah. People don't understand that a college education doesn't guarantee you a good life. Plenty of aimless zombies go to college thinking this, yet they and their arrogance get shot down the moment they get stuck at some depressing desk job trying to pay off debts. IT, for instance, doesn't even require a degree. All you need is certification which takes less than a month if I remember correctly. College or no college, the important thing is to know your options and to decide what's best for you.
>>
>>710138913
i see, well with the open app development market as an example, there's probably also alot of oppertunities for people with alot of time on their hands and with nothing to lose i suppose magic could happen.
>>
>>710131734

For the first 2 years maybe, but even then they will tend to pick you at a lower rate.

After the first 2 years it's not a problem because you have experience. By 5 years you are preferred over someone with just a degree and it literally does not matter what said degree was in unless it has the letters "PHD" attached to it.

I stopped college after just finishing my Associates as I came t my senses and make $200k. Just be good at what you do and the rest will fall into place.
>>
I've dropped a foundation degree in a Cisco CNET because the course was absolute horse shit. I didn't learn anything I couldn't already find on Google in maybe 1 or 2 searches and most of it I already knew. The main reason I left was to take a year and get my shit together, which I'm definitely succeeding in thus far. I want to be a better version of myself before doing a degree and actually getting a job, plus I feel I need a break from academia just to understand what true freedom is like, and it's awesome. I do have ambitions, but I want to really know myself before I pursue anything serious. Unfortunately I'm already in £14,000 worth of debt, but it's a lesson well-learned; don't half-ass your ambitions, goals or future.

I am, however, incredibly lucky that I can live in my own place at 19, nearly 20, and have been doing so a week after my 18th. And in other aspects, regarding a very serious, obsessive relationship I feel lucky to have escaped it, else I could've spent my life with that slut-bitch. I think my luckiest moment was escaping that shit-fest alive. However, as a very socially inept person, with next-to-no rapport I'm gaining confidence in myself and abilities, and have taking to eating much healthier and exercising regularly.

I do plan on going back to uni next year and taking up a degree in something computer related. Preferably software development, computer sciences or cyber security.
>>
>>710139364

>>
>>710139345
I mean most of software guys are actually jealous about "real engineers" like you. Very few programmers actually understand full stack, most of them just make money from specializing rather mediocre skills, while man like you can literally build new car engine if society ever go through apocalypse.
>>
>>710130671
I went to university right out of high school for engineering. I dropped out after the first year because I didn't like it. I had passed all of my classes except for 1 programming class which I passed the second semester, even had a 4.0 in calc 1 & 2. I left because I didn't enjoy it at all, not because of lack of motivation/failure.
Moved in with my grandparents and started working a couple of part time jobs. 2 years later started EMT, now I'm a Paramedic Firefighter. Make 44k/year starting which is plenty for a single dude. I just bought my first house, which is in a pretty big college town. I bang college sluts most days off. I'm going to school part time to finish up an associates and then I'll do a bridge program to registered nurse. Not really sure what I'll do education wise after that, thinking about doing crna.

TL;DR
Life's been pretty good since I dropped out of university.

>>
>>710139907
everyone is expendable. Nothing about having a degree makes you less so.

That's the whole reason i ended it with "just be good at what you do".

See how that works? Or are you just butt hurt knowing that someone who goes straight to work out of High school will have 4 years experience on you and a _better_ chance of being hired than a person with a degree? Shit all he has to do is a little "bullshit" and say he's not graduated yet _because_ of the 4 years of full time work.

Stay mad.
>>
>>710139910
See, it's frowned upon because anyone can do it. But it's not too bad, right? You don't really have to do much, and not for very long. You're outdoors, with some other people you could form a decent bond with and more importantly you can do as you please between "trips". Maybe stop for a McDonald's real quick and have a quick joint. You can't really do shit like that if you're being cooked up in an office all day.

Yea, I dropped out 2 years ago. Have to pay for it myself, with no government assistance. I'm currently saving up with every intention of going back. Life has slowed down a lot, but other than that it's pretty much the same. Only real difference is work instead of school. More time for video games, though.

Failed out of college when I was 19. Worked a few decent paying jobs, then got into nuclear power at 25. I love my life now.

If you don't have enough drive and focus to complete a basic 4 year degree,
then what good will you be to our company where we require much more?

Most people get good paying jobs because they know people. My friends failed and dropped out of college and now he's working in a IT firm because his old high school buddy owns it.

Make over 40k a year as a supervisor.

I dropped out. Life is great. Work in Hollywood and half the people here barely have a high school education.

yeah, the first years.

Then suddenly, the set of rules becomes less and less clear, approximations get thrown left and right, and you only get a useful result if you approximate at the right place.

Then you have those approximations where you know should not apply, but actually give you the result that is consistent with measurments.
