So, i have no experience on the topic personally. My great grandfather was shot in both world wars, one was a clean simple shot through i think the liver or the kidney, he's had problems with the organ for the rest of his life.
Other wound was a salvo from right shoulder down along his body with some automatic pistol and, surprise, he's had problems with his shoulder ever since.
No reason not to believe to, i think it really depends on how you get hit and mostly on the caliber of the gun, barrel length etc., but that's one example of how gunshots do actual damage.
