Nirvana - Grunge is nothing but apathetic punk music. While I DO enjoy Nirvana the vast majority of it is crap. There are NO albums that are good all the way through outside of the greatest hits compilations. The majority of it is filler. I lost all respect for the "genius" of Kurt's songwriting when I started playing guitar and learned Nirvana's whole catalogue can be easily learned by a guy with 2 weeks worth of guitar skills. Nirvana is not skilled or talented, their songwriting is sub par.... that being said the sum of the parts is greater than their individual value. The songs are catchy and they "speak" to us 90s kids perhaps better than any other music of that era.
Jimi Hendrix - A good guitarist who wrote some interesting music. BUT there are at hundreds of famous guitarists that are miles better.
Hendrix and Cobain are subject to the Jesus phenomenon. Any man who dies in their prime, particularly a celebrity or musician, will be remembered as thousands of times better than they ever actually were. While I enjoy Hendrix, the majority of his music and hits are mediocre. His best stuff is the least critically acclaimed, Band of Gypsies, which had no radio hits and the critics hated, is by miles the best material.

I think all three of those groups The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and Nirvana; are remembered for about the same reason, they are bands that essentially defined the era that they came from. Is it the best music, most skillful, or most creative? No.
But you listen to any of those groups and they really give you the "feel" of that era. Some groups are just fantastic of giving you a taste of the mentality, ambience, aesthetics, and personal philosophy; of that time.
There's worse examples as far as that goes, like the Ramones defining the late 70s and 80s. Fucking Smash Mouth in the late 90s. Or David Cassidy. Sure, they may give you a taste of that era. But is it good? No.
So I understand the respect for those groups even though there's many examples of their contemporaries that made better music in similar genres.
