Good advice but LOL at 1/4 martial arts fights ending in an RNC and it being impossible to defend. There are a lot of techniques for defending RNC's, "answering the telephone" for example is the first one I was taught in BJJ, basically just turn your head to the opposite side of their lead arm and then raise your own arm on that side up to flex your shoulder and create some space to keep a jugular and the airway open. This might work in some cases but the postal service uses postal codes and they might be a little suspicious returning a letter to a location that isn't even close to the same postal code it was marked as being from when it passed through the USPS. I used to be a HARDCORE shoplifter. Got a lot easier after my teenage years too, employees stopped paying attention to me largely. Only got "really" caught twice out of the literally thousands of times I've done it.
First luckily all I was stealing was chicken strips and soda and just said I was starving and hungry so they didn't even call the cops. Also I had a copy of Ender's Game in my bag which we talked about for a bit so I think the security guy was all like "aww, he's trying to better himself like Ender, he just needs a chance". Got a non-legal letter from the store a few months later asking me for restitution, ignored it, charges never filed of any kind.
Second, I was stealing vodka from a liquor store in a more ghetto area. I had just stolen from the store the day before and unbeknownst to me they had figured it out from the cameras (most stores don't review their footage unless they have a reason to be suspicious, in this case I just said I had forgotten my wallet after stuffing the bottle in my pants, works most of the time) but they had a guy on staff who was a little bigger than me and blocked the door when he saw me on my way in to pull the same trick.
They still let me go when I told them I just had no money at all. Guess the time spent dealing with the cops didn't really compute for a eight dollar bottle of vodka.
Had many other scares over the years, followed by security, confronted but not caught, yelled at, etc. Stopped over the last few years because they actually seem to watch me more now that I'm in my thirties, and I don't know how well they'll buy the innocent poor guy excuse at this age.

Unless you're trapped in a place where you can't reach a hospital in a day or so, it's not really a myth. Generally they need to come out, they will cause inflammation and they wound will never truly heal. The fragments can travel and damage other tissue.
If you have hope of reaching a hospital in a reasonable time it probably makes more sense to prevent blood loss and let surgeons worry abut removing the bullet.
The main problem with removing it yourself is that the average person has little chance of a) having proper tools b) not doing more damage in the process and c) recognizing sudden catastrophes like nicking an artery when digging around.
