When I was 15 I invited 9 people to hangout for my birthday, I didn't want anything big just a day playing vidya and chilling with my bros, Out of those 9 people I invited, 1 showed up. The others all had excuses last minute.
I'm still friends with that 1 but the others I haven't talked to in forever. I was hurt a bit when they didn't show up, but the real hurt was explaining to my parents that when my one friend showed up, that was it.
It's a terrible feeling knowing you would go above and beyond for your friends and maybe even people you don't talk to much just to make them happy, but they wouldn't do anything for you.
That feeling I know we all have or had at one time, but once you get uncared for so many times in your life, you lose that feeling, and it's replaced with being uncaring towards others.

That's why, when I turned 18, I went out drinking with like 4 buddies, no parties and bullshit, went to the pub, got drunk, had a good time and later smoked a spliff. I hate large groups (be it work/hanging out).
Your story reminds me of what happened to a guy from my HS but on a much larger scale, he invited like 35 people, thirthy fucking five, ONE showed up, ONE. It was just depressing, one of the teachers had a word with everyone from his class(when he wasn't around).
No matter who, I always TRY and go to someone's birthday party because said person wants me there and if I can't make it I tell him FIRST.
