I'm not a real punk, I'm a real person. But aside from that I disagree. Capitalism didn't have anything to do with it, it's a lack of philosophical arguments and an understanding of reality. You can still be a part of something greater and meaningful and turn profits. It's just a simple matter of staying moral and true to your values. The fact that people bought into the record companies renditions of punk is what drew attention away from what could have been an amazing grassroots movement. We can thank public education for the surplus of idiots.
The lack of philosophy is what most problems even outside of the sphere of rock and roll are caused by.
