Cruz, Bush, Rubio, Kasich etc. Combined more republicans voted for those guys than Trump, but Trump got the most votes in most contests because the anti-Trump vote was split up. A lot of the Bush, Cruz etc. voters aren't showing up for Trump in the general. Many aren't voting, many are going 3rd party, some are even voting for Clinton. Hillary, on average, is polling about 9% higher than Trump today. She actually did better in the primaries than he did (about 4 million more votes than Bernie got, too) but the media narrative continues to be that she's unpopular with democrats, even though she's more popular with her own party than Trump is with his. Therefore, she's kicking his ass.
You cannot connect the dots looking forward. You can only connect them looking backwards. You have to trust in something, your gut, destiny, life, karma or whatever because believing that the dots will connect down the road will give you confidence to follow your heart even when it leaves you off the right path and that will make all the difference.
