You couldn't be more wrong about Rothko:

For some critics, the large size was an attempt to make up for a lack of substance. In retaliation, Rothko stated:

"I realize that historically the function of painting large pictures is painting something very grandiose and pompous. The reason I paint them, however . . . is precisely because I want to be very intimate and human. To paint a small picture is to place yourself outside your experience, to look upon an experience as a stereopticon view or with a reducing glass. However you paint the larger picture, you are in it. It isn’t something you command!"

He even went so far as to recommend that viewers position themselves as little as 18 inches away from the canvas[49] so that they might experience a sense of intimacy, as well as awe, a transcendence of the individual, and a sense of the unknown.

As Rothko achieved success, he became increasingly protective of his works, turning down several potentially important sales and exhibition opportunities:

"A picture lives by companionship, expanding and quickening in the eyes of the sensitive observer. It dies by the same token. It is therefore a risky and unfeeling act to send it out into the world. How often it must be permanently impaired by the eyes of the vulgar and the cruelty of the impotent who would extend the affliction universally!"

What do you fags look for in a painting?

I go for colour palettes, proportions, technique and sometimes, depending on the genre, the context

In classic romantic paintings i look for small details in the context, specially in Da Vinci ones

I don't have to tell you things are bad. We all know things are bad. It's a depression. Everybody's out of work, or scared of losing their job. A dollar buys a nickel's worth. Banks are going bust, shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter. Punks are running wild in the street and nobody anywhere seems to know what to do and there's no end to it. We know the air is unfit to breath, and the food is unfit to eat. We sit watching out TVs while some newscaster tells us that today we had fifteen homicides and sixty-three violent crimes, as if that's the way things are supposed to be.

I believe it is a Neoclassical painting, so it is probably conforming to 19th Century standards of beauty more than Roman ones. I don't know what the answer to your question is though.
>>
>>709495431
kek
>>
>>709491729
>Romantic classic art

STOP RIGHT THERE

ROMANTIC ART WAS ONE SCHOOL AND NEOCLASSICAL IS ANOTHER AND CLASSICAL IS STILL YET ANOTHER HE'S BEEN POSTING NEOCLASSICAL ART FOR THE MOST PART BUT 'ROMANTIC CLASSIC' IS CONTRADICTORY THEY ARE OPPOSING IDEOLOGIES
>>
>>709495431
nice try but no i don't like it because people who like it don't know what they're talking about and are completely blind to how little they know. it shows no thought about art when you say that's your favourite

other offenders:
impressionism
pre-raphaelites
futurism
art noveau
l'art pompier
german romanticism
basically all 19th century british art

art for plebs

>>
>>709495850
it's not pretentious if i know what i'm talking about

there's nothing redeemable about 19th century art. it was art literally made only so the tasteless middle-class could enjoy it and buy it. there's nothing "high art" about this shit

Just to play contrarian

>least amount of work for most profit/reputation

Is this implying that the less complex and less time devoted to working on something, somehow makes it less valuable? That seems a tad presumptuous, don't you think? I've seen people spend enormous amounts of time and effort on something, only in my opinion for it to turn out like shit. I've seen art, such as music or paintings, that were needlessly complicated, where as something that was simple and minimalistic made me experience more than the complicated piece could ever have.

Art, and the judgmental nature of it, is truly in the eye of the beholder. It's exactly like the anon said that you were replying to;

>I just don't see this as "art"

That's the point I'm trying to make. Just because you can't see it, doesn't mean that it isn't there.

i said i hated one painting and gave my reason why. you're all butthurt because it's your favourite so you're like POST SOME ART THEN like it means anything. no, i'm not going to dictate your taste for you. do your own research. instead of being like "oh wow there's a whole wide world of art out there, i should go explore it!" you're like "THERE'S NO BETTER ART THAN REPIN, PROVE ME WRONG"

how about you give me $5 or you lose. it's about as relevant as your request

No, that anon's description was shit. Phryne was a whore and she posed for the sculptor Praxiteles when he made his statue of Aphrodite. This was considered blasphemy, but when Hyperides defended her in court he removed her robe and the court allegedly couldn't condemn her because they believed that such beauty was actually divine.

Not the same anon here but you did need the last word and you just told the other guy he would get the last word. You just described what would happen if you didn't respond, but you responded. So now you get the last word but by doing so, you lose. He didn't need the last word like you do, so he could have had it or not. You needed it and couldn't resist. Total failure.
