Most of my studies are more on the theoretical and classical than on modern music, so I get that. I love performing all kinds of music, but with how much time my studies and teaching lessons take, I can't focus on many performance opportunities. I did just finish an arrangement for our university's pop a cappella group though, and we might be competing at the ICCA this year, so that should give me some great performing experience

These will maybe take you up to the point of a year or two of actual credited classes. I also ask because one of my favorite bassists plays for Cannibal Corpse, Alex Webster, and he is a fucking genius and is probably one of the best bassists ever. Most people think of death metal as mindless and simplistic, but Alex destroys that stereotype which I don't want to be apart of.

Right now, most of my studies fall on a huge research paper I'm doing for my degree. Paper has to do with some aspect of music and history. I'm writing mine on the history of music within disability cultures, like the blind community, the deaf community, etc. Even about instrumentalizations and arrangements/compositions for members of amputee culture, such as Ravel's one-handed piano compositions. I could go for pages about the definition of disability and how it is fluid and tentative, depending on social/situational context

Relative pitch is essential at all times, you are correct. I do not have perfect pitch. However, some of my best friends are violinists or vocalists with perfect pitch. Their tuning abilities are unmatched, and dictation is the easiest thing in the world for them. If there's the option to have perfect pitch, I say go for it, but you're correct in saying relative pitch is essential. Perfect Pitch is definitely not useless though
