I was a combat engineer deployed to afghanistan for route clearance, fresh out of basic training assigned to my unit directly after they got back from NTC. When I went to afghanistan, they told me that the afghan army were our allies, and that they would be taking up guard duties and such on some of the COPs we were assigned to tear down. Two of them were guarding us in one COP during the middle of the day, like a week into deployment. Tattered uniforms, one battered m16 and less than ten rounds of ammo between them. They wasted it shooting 'warning shots' at kids to keep them away from the perimeter. When we sat down to eat, I tried to befriend them, believing all the bullshit indoctrination they'd given me without actually having an opportunity to speak to the other soldiers. Tried to share my MRE with them and when they started trying to feed me the food I'd given them, smiling and chuckling, the other soldiers pointed out that they were basically sizing me up for gay sex, because apparently doing something as simple as sharing food with someone over there is a flirtation. Until that moment, I didn't understand what people had meant when they said that the Army had 'set them up for failure'.

When I went through 5 years ago, it was all about whether you were combat arms or not. If you were in a combat arms unit, it would be 100% male, with very loose 'regulations' as to how much sleep and food you're allowed minimum and plenty of all-night smoke sessions and sleep deprivation. Non-combat arms gets 10-20% females in the unit, and as a result gets significantly more time to eat, sleep and write home. Also, if the regulations get broken in a non-combat arms unit, you can go up the chain to report it, in a combat arms unit the colonel will just laugh at you and then smoke you until you receive micro-fractures in your legs/arms, send you to have an x-ray to determine the presence of these fractures, and then turn you into a holdover for 9 months.

They definitely do not fly drones back and forth across the ocean for strikes. Every vehicle that goes up must have a certain number of hours of maintenance depending on the number of flight hours. It's not hard to imagine that someone needs to deliver the parts, and yes, sometimes they do come in on a transport craft, especially in a war like this where air superiority is a given. But what about a real war? You know, the kind of thing that you'd never even be expected to consider in garrison. The kind of war where giant transport aircraft will be dropping like flies to enemy fighter jets. If you have air superiority without backup on the ground in a conventional war, your planes are going to be wreckage in a matter of weeks as they're all broken one by one with no parts to fix them or simply deadlined as the enemy rolls over your airfield with IFTs.
It's easy to imagine in the current war, where the enemy possesses next to zero anti-aircraft weapons, that aircraft are the ultimate power, but you have to remember that these are sand niggers. I have not a doubt in my mind that russia/china's air force would decimate ours in every engagement if only due to the fact that our airmen are excessively complacent and do not understand true combat.
