That would be the proper and military thing to do.
As for cleaning, keep the outside relatively free of dirt. The inside clean of dirt, unburned powder and carbon buildup. Lightly lubricate the trigger pivot points, and the bolt. Excess lubricant only attracts dirt.

Copper brushes are probably for the bolt face, to help remove carbon. If you can see the surface has oil on it then or has enough oil. Damp, but not soaked and dripping wet.
Still, everyone getting 6 hours of sleep instead of 7, and not having their throats slit by the VC is the right choice to make.
