They didn't terminate support, more significantly reduced capability and support. There is in no doubt it will be fixed in the future. I lost the ability to use fglrx and then was forced to use the inbuilt ubuntu alternative which in my opinion is not that good. And i didn't think to do what your suggesting. Thank you I will look into that.
