It was fantastic when it came out, and deserves the praise it used to get. The problem is mostly how much games have improved since then, and how it compares to more recent games. The combat is shallow and repetitive, which is why they've changed it so much in the sequels. The level design really isn't very good, either, and it doesn't do a very good job of telling you what you're supposed to be doing, so you spend a lot of time just wandering around looking for the next cutscene.

It's about context, though. Even just the Kingdom Hearts series has improved so much mechanically that the first one just isn't very fun to play anymore. Now that the series has fixed the flaws that KH had, it's a lot easier to see them.

Nah, there are plenty of games that I loved as a teen, but when I play them now are pure garbage. Mostly it's because the tech was new and shiny at the time, and didn't have all that much else going for it. Or because I could relate with the dumbass edgy protagonist at the time and felt a connection with its "super deep story."
