I'm German and it's funny how dry and humorless lots of Germans react whenever something Nazi is mentioned. Like the Holocaust happened yesterday or something. I usually don't realise that I'm military. Sure, I wear green and hold a gun, and sleep in a bunk with platoon- and section-mates, but the fact that I'm army isn't something I ever take in.
This one time we were in a parade formation for an area inspection. I stood still at attention. I saw my reflection in a window to the side of my field of vision. I was wearing an army uniform, standing in a military parade position.
All around me I heard marching. Soldiers timing their steps. Left, left, left right left. Left, left, left right.
Singing their marching songs. Training to be soldiers, fight for our land. Once in our lives, two years of our time.
Parade commands being shouted in my native tongue, resonating throughout the premises. Dari kanan, cepat jalan. Akan menghadap ke hadapan, ke kiri pusing.
That was the only moment in time I realised I was a soldier. And I cried absolutely silently while standing at attention having the sergeants inspecting my platoon. Tears flowed down the side of my cheek as I just stood still there hands by my side.

Now the chair force would be cool. I've always wanted to fly jets anyway. But I just hate the idea of being under leadership. I'm a very solitary, independent person, so having to take orders flips a switch in me that makes me go into rage mode, probably because I had to put up with so much shit in my early years. But yeah, I don't think anyone will be drafted here any time soon.

One does not clean their room. They wipe the tops of the doors and bottoms of their bed frames to prepare for stand by area inspections. One does not organise their locker. They fold their uniforms in some convoluted manner to show name and country to prepare for stand by bed inspections.
One does not walk from point to point. One marches on the road as a platoon. Mistakes are not committed solo. They are made as a platoon.
I still find it difficult to believe that I'm army. Perhaps it's because I'm being put on a different, lighter training scheme than most others.
Most others undergo a 4-6 month training programme which ends in an overnight 24km march halfway across the island wearing at least 40 kilos of freight.
