I pay $450/mo for a one-bedroom that's just me. It's so fucking nice to not have room-mates...

Pic related, my place.
>>
$1800 /mo rent. 4 bed room 2k+ sq ft. 3 stories. view of mountains
>>
>>708645583
Dude. Pics?
>>
$600/month, includes all utilities. Going down to $500 soon, I didn't have the money for a deposit when I moved in so my landlord was cool and let me split it up and pay a little extra per month for it. One bedroom, living room, kitchen and bathroom, with windows that open, and its all to myself, I love it. My last place was $450 and probably illegal, just a verbal contract with some guy for the lower half of a duplex, lived a whole year without a washer/dryer, no kitchen (had a mini-fridge and toaster oven) and the windows couldn't open. Lived in that badger hole for a whole fuckin year. So yeah, pretty grateful for what I have.
>>
I pay around 600£ for a 3x5 bedroom in London.
Toilet and utilities are not included. Fuck this place is expensive.
>>
>>708645701
Sure. Give me a sec.
>>
1200/month for a 1 bed 1 bathroom apartment downtown. Feels good
>>
i pay £420 p/m to live in london, in a bedroom in a student house. pretty cheap for london these days.
>>
Dad died, got the house for free. No rent. Spiders though.
>>
>>708644284
$1400/mo. w/ washer/dryer, utilities not incl.
>>
$200/mo, parents attic
i dont think they should be charging me at all but...
>>
>>708645983
420£ p/m in London is ridiculously low.
What zone are you in m8?

>>708644284
165eur/month for house, 2 story,4 bedrooms, 2 toilets+showers, garage, 1000m2 garden. Downside is I live more or less in a commercial windmill farm so it gets noisy once you hit 4 or 5 beaufort.

Some of us work at places other than walmart. Where we HAVE to be able to up and move at a whims notice. We work insane overtime and cant be hassled with owning a house and everything that comes with it. We live in cities where houses are a minimum 500k. We'd rather stack portfolio investments and not have the huge liability of a house. Theres plenty of reasons not to buy a house.

I really want to do this, saving money to buy an income property as my first property in a few years, I'm twenty and will have 30K saved up next year when I turn 21. Should I keep saving til I make enough money? houses/apartments here are about 70-80K to own. Or should I dump it all in the stocks?

And would it be best to buy an apartment and rent out the units and live in one, or buy a house and rent the whole thing out, and maybe live with parents for free?? Idk

My parents are poor, so no help with investments there btw

any advice helps thank you

>>708650937
Nice try. You clearly dont have as much going for you as you claim. Why not buy one of these 500k houses. Apartments are not even depreciating assets, they are not assets at all. Its like renting a tv or a couch. Do you do that also? You claiming you are building a magical portfolio of diverse investments instead of investing in a home which has the best chance of return corresponding to its risk is laughable. When you have your things in order you purchase a home, whether condo, apartment, or house. You do not rent. Pretty sure any long term financial planner on earth or family office will tell you this is your first move.

The generalization that rent comes out to about the same as a mortgage is total nonense. It's hugely dependant on the market in a specific area, interest rates, and the rental market.

Plus, when you own you are exposed to risk, when you rent you are not. Appliance failure, new roof, leaky basement? Renters don't pay a penny to have any of that fixed.

Renting can be a really smart financial move in many situations. Buying can be a really smart financial move in other situations.

It's not as simple as Buy good Rent Bad.

Hi I work in finance.
you're wrong.
Apartments are not assets, they are liabilities.
they in fact will never appreciate in value...EVER!

the best you can hope for is inflation of the regional market.

too draw out this subtly lets say there's a boom
in your town...

your house quadruples in value, when you sell that house you're still buying in an inflated market... see what I'm getting at?

Everyone quests to rent, youre correct. Work hard, save your money so you can give it to someone else who owns the building you live in. They can become wealthier and you can stay financially stagnant. Thats what all the greats say, Buffet, Vanderbilt, etc.

I pay $300 a month in SE Portland, OR.

It's much cheaper than it should be since I'm in a shared house and split the room I'm in with my girlfriend. We hold the lease and rent out the four rooms in the house for about 600-700 a month to friends. We pay a bit under rate since we organize everything and generally do all of the yard/house work.

All in all, it's a pretty good setup: nice location, spacious house with a yard and a clean, modern interior, garage big enough for two cars. I'm pretty happy with it.

Are you implying people who spend millions and millions building multi family structures are creating investments that will not have a profitable return?

You can give your money to someone for rent, they will pay their mortgage with it, and own the building eventually selling for profit or collecting revenue on a building which has no monies due.

Or you can be the person collecting the money and owning the building..up to you.
>>

So you plan on renting for the rest of your life? I'm 25 right now and the average rent is somewhere around mid-900 in the US. what do you think that's going to looke like 15 years from now? And after 15 years where has your money gone?

Sure a house requires maintenance on your part but assuming my house is paid off I dont need to worry about a place to live for the rest of my life in case I cant work anymore. Plus on average properties and homes only gain value if maintained properly so after those 15 years my house will be worth more than today, making up for that maintenance cost or at least for a major part of it

Right, clearly a good place to buy. Where I live (Toronto) I'm renting a great space on the ground floor of a house downtown for 1850. Buying something similar would run a million plus, and I'd pay 2 or 3 times my rent on the mortgage.

Instead I'll rent and save the extra until buying makes sense.

Well, the trick is to pick an area in a city somewhere up and coming, buy at a sensible price and renovate. As the market rises you sell at a nice profit, and then move to another area you view as up and coming. If you work in finance you probably earn tons of money anyway, so you can afford to just live wherever you want and get snobby about postcodes, but for real people you can grow wealth if you're not a snooty faggot about it.

No salary increase in sight I'm working on cutting down my expenses as best possible but I now realise I am stuck here with no hope of pursuing my dream (insufficient funds) and I'm only 21...

why do people like new?
essentially avoidance of risk.
new means clean as well,
so again risk.

Im not saying that buying/selling/renting
isn't a good way to invest, but chances are when you need to sell so will others.

playing them like investments requires you too sell and buy at peak and bust respectively...
and that's just not reality.

dont for get taxes/realtor/fees(apartments and condos are notorious for large fix-up fees)

Where I am rent is way less than buying. We rent and invest the excess savings in ETFs. In 10 to 15 years we'll have enough to buy a house cash.

Instead of paying the bank thousands in interest over 25 years, we'll pay thousands in rent over 10 to 15 and then live mortgage/rent free.

>>708651862
I do think that renting is in 99% of the cases the worse decision IF you have enough liabilty to get a good loan.
Even if you move out 3 months later, just lend it to somebody who pays like 70% of your loans.
Save a little on the side, downgrade your car for example and you will have a housing that belongs to you in 10 to 15 years.
But technically you are right.
Buying is not always the better option but allmost always.
Renting is for the poor, who dont get loans

It is a degenerate shithole. I love Portland and Oregon in general, but the city is overrun by blue-haired dipshits who move here from California or god knows where so they can be lazy and take photos of the brunch, and homeless junkies who move here because the heroin is a couple cents cheaper and there are plenty of social services set up by bleeding hearts (see the blue-haired cunts mentioned above).

The true spirit of Oregon and Portland is "leave me the fuck alone". It's lesbian couples growing weed and going hiking and in the mountains on weekends. It's blue collar workers who like going to strip clubs.

tldr - if you're from California or are even vaguely liberal please don't come here. The only acceptable reason to move to Portland is for work. People who move here """for the atmosphere""" are the ones ruining what makes the city great, and turning it into a parody of itself.
