i pay $320 in rent in our 4-bedroom apartment. we split all utilities and buy our own food

Going down to $500 soon, I didn't have the money for a deposit when I moved in so my landlord was cool and let me split it up and pay a little extra per month for it. One bedroom, living room, kitchen and bathroom, with windows that open, and its all to myself, I love it. My last place was $450 and probably illegal, just a verbal contract with some guy for the lower half of a duplex, lived a whole year without a washer/dryer, no kitchen (had a mini-fridge and toaster oven) and the windows couldn't open. Lived in that badger hole for a whole fuckin year. So yeah, pretty grateful for what I have.
I pay around 600£ for a 3x5 bedroom in London.
Toilet and utilities are not included. Fuck this place is expensive.

The generalization that rent comes out to about the same as a mortgage is total nonense. It's hugely dependant on the market in a specific area, interest rates, and the rental market.
Plus, when you own you are exposed to risk, when you rent you are not. Appliance failure, new roof, leaky basement? Renters don't pay a penny to have any of that fixed.
Renting can be a really smart financial move in many situations. Buying can be a really smart financial move in other situations.

It's much cheaper than it should be since I'm in a shared house and split the room I'm in with my girlfriend. We hold the lease and rent out the four rooms in the house for about 600-700 a month to friends. We pay a bit under rate since we organize everything and generally do all of the yard/house work.
All in all, it's a pretty good setup: nice location, spacious house with a yard and a clean, modern interior, garage big enough for two cars. I'm pretty happy with it.

Sure a house requires maintenance on your part but assuming my house is paid off I dont need to worry about a place to live for the rest of my life in case I cant work anymore. Plus on average properties and homes only gain value if maintained properly so after those 15 years my house will be worth more than today, making up for that maintenance cost or at least for a major part of it

Well, the trick is to pick an area in a city somewhere up and coming, buy at a sensible price and renovate. As the market rises you sell at a nice profit, and then move to another area you view as up and coming. If you work in finance you probably earn tons of money anyway, so you can afford to just live wherever you want and get snobby about postcodes, but for real people you can grow wealth if you're not a snooty faggot about it.

I do think that renting is in 99% of the cases the worse decision IF you have enough liabilty to get a good loan.
