everything was worse because there was virtually no internet. I didn't get my first computer until I was like 13. before that it was just snes and genesis. You waited hours and hours to download a small movie or tv show episode from things like soulseek.
The advantages was that most people liked the president, there were no wars, and people were less racist (unless they were from the sticks)

There was a lot of ecstasy and machine guns.
We were all depressed for no reason. We were the first "participation" trophy generation. We expected a great life without putting in the hard work. The internet seemed promising.

Slower.

Pure garbage. Vhs and no internet in the pals of our hands. We had to fap to magazines and loli was really hard to get unless you had a dial up modem.
Well.....
We had Sega and Nintendo being the big video game companies.
People bought CD's instead of having ipods with playlists, and people used to brag that they had X amount of CD's... some had hundreds.
Internet was just coming out but I didn't have it. We had a computer but it wasn't connected to the internet. We shared video games via floppy disks, which didn't work all the time. Games on cds were coming out, but we couldn't copy them easily at the time.
I had a beeper instead of a cell phone. If someone wanted to contact me, they called my beeper and left their number to call them. Come to think of it, this was so impractical but we all had them. People left their numbers with 911 after them (emergency) or 411 (need info) or 143 (I love you... though I only got that once).
The Atlanta Braves actually won a world series.
Music was just starting to suck, as Nirvana and Metallica brought us the last music that is worth listening to. All the best music is from the 70's and 80's.
That's about all I remember that's different from now.
The crack was stronger
>>708569412
VHS was the shit the fuck you on about?
One of the best memories was going down to the video store to rent a VHS every weekend and watching it with friends.
>>708569022
thats bullshit. Born in 84. Never received a participation trophy. Everyone (especially baby boomers) accused us of being lazy and just expecting everything to be given to us but in reality they had unrealistic expectations (Just walk in and start on the bottom floor and get promoted to ceo like I did!" Since we were not climbing the corporate ladder like they did by our 20's they said "You don't work hard enough!"
And despite them mooching off grandma and grandpa and mooching off the government after that their arguments of "self made success" turned out to be real bullshit.
>>708569412
Oh yes. I remember this. Ugh. I was under 18 until 1999, so I had to get someone else to buy porn magazines for me.... and had to hide them under the bed or deep in a closet so my parents wouldn't find them (they eventually did).

Clinton had the highest approval rating. The Gulf war and Kosovo were barely wars. The Gulf war lasted 7 months. Kosovo lasted days and peope were way less racist then today. We all watched family matters and fresh prince and the Cosby show. No one saw them as "black tv shows". The 90's was about not seeing race.
After the 90's it became about seeing race and it made everyone more racist. SJW's emerged and that agitated people who were slightly racist into going full klan.
Even my close friend who used to very cool in the 90's of everyone regardless of race and would even go into the inner city and eat soul food and listen to rape is now a full nazi.

>>708569673

Most the people commenting are young fags born in the 90's. You have to of been born in the early 80s or older to be a 90's kid or else you don't really remeber it or did not really participate.
The 90's were an awsome time. The internet was new and not populated by normalfags and retards. It was still sort of expensive in the mid 90's to own a computer and have Internet. So naturally the people that were on where smart college kids and more well off. Not like the trailer trash of today. It felt like the dawn of a new time. Video games were coming into their own too. There were literally hundreds of awsome cartoons that were mostly good and not autistic Japanese shit. Arcades were a thing and they were awsome. People had more personality and kids were more imaginative. Movies were great, music was great. I could go on forever....
>>708569673

>>708570535
That's because everything now has been pussified with the faggots and niggers crying all the time.
Every host asked if you wanted the smoking or non smoking section, anti smoking ads were in their infancy so they were still shocking/informative. Weed was not flaunted, it was a big trip if you got busted with it. Super soakers were constantly outdoing themselves. WWE was still WWF and it peaked b4 2000's. Hip Hop had substance and it was all about outdoing each other lyrically, whilst being macho. What else, oh yeah we didn't have all of this politically correct bullshit and people could have a good laugh about race, which was probably best about the 90's
>>708567699
hey guys, remember when we had no GPS?
how much fun was it trying to navigate with those fucking huge maps.
then we got GPS systems that were terrible, but still better than nothing. and now all you have to do is say "phone: give me directions to __" and you're golden.
>>708570471
your experience doesn't reflect the rest of the world. I grew up in Pennsylvania and Texas and they never offered participation trophies. The closest thing I remember to one is I won a pencil in first grade for "most creative" but I didn't care. I remember one kid who had some trophies at my church when I went to his house. He seemed kinda like a pos so I had no idea where he got them or what for (I knew he played soccer but to one treated him like he was anything special) The only people who cared about trophies were certain kids parents. None of us wanted or cared about that kinda shit.
In true 90's fashion, we perceived reward systems from places like school or programs as indoctrination.

yup, my dad died when I was 18 and he didn't have any retirement plans so it fucked my mom up royally. So guess who had to help get a job and pay the bills so she didn't have to sacrifice her lifestyle of buying organic or moving into an apartment?
After she remarried and I was throwing all my paychecks at her for a few years she kicked me out of the house.
This isn't unique amongst most of my friends either. Most of our parents stayed at home while they attended college or built up finances and when we became 18 all our parents started demanding rent. The few who had cool parents all had cars, college, savings and better jobs by the time they were in their mid 20's. Most of us though have little savings because we spent all our money on beater car and rent and ended up working at pizzaslut way longer then we should have because we were being threatened to be thrown on the street if we didn't keep paying their bills.
I got b& from AOL in 95 for sharing porn pics in chat rooms.

Daria was amazing and a big relief in my awkward and angry teens to know I wasn't the only one that thought that way.

Boomers also got jobs and worked their way up toe management without degrees. When in hiring positions they start requiring degrees. Then expect their kids to work their way to the top without degrees.
Yeah, they borrowed from their grandparents for social security and now they are borrowing from their children. Even old people who have retirements and wealth still take out social security after retirement because it is "free money" and vote under the pretense that said candidate will take their benefits.
They also did take jobs overseas because "free market capitalism!" which made them a ton of money, but leaves us with no unskilled high paying jobs.
They also brag that they helped stopped the vietnam war and shit but if you actually asked your uncles and aunts all they did was smoke weed and fuck around and listen to records Or they did nothing at all and wasn't political but they act like they took a bullet for MLK.

The 90s were the beginning of the end for America's shared mass culture; not everybody had cable, and most people watched CBS+NBC+ABC+PBS and that weird new Fox network. The only real day to day difference between than and now is you have access to more media. Back then you had maybe five movies on VHS and you were happy to watch them once a week. And you had to read a tv guide and wait for your favourite shit to come on. Graphics in games have gotten better but gameplay has gotten slightly worse in pc games. I didn't have a fear of telephones in the 90s. I would happily ring my friends. Now the idea of just calling them for a chat makes me tense up and feel like an old man.

No it isn't. I went to two very liberal colleges. And back in the 90s and early 2000s, professors were not scared to talk about opposing views. The only instance I ever heard of any instructor having any issue at all at my schools was an art instructor that refused to support a republican student group, because he didn't want his beliefs out in the open. No one got fired for allowing ideas to compete. Now, instructors are being forced out of tenured positions because coddled kids are whining about safe spaces, trigger warnings, and preferred pronouns. Colleges are no longer academic spaces, they are echo chambers for the weak.

Why? The cold war had ended, the economy was pretty strong, no real threat of terrorism, no totalitarian surveillance-obsessed government. It was a good time to live. The world as we know it really did end in 2000.

Remember being really hyped for the godzilla movie that I bought the soundtrack. Had many pairs of nike basketball shoes and the reebok shaqnosis were my favorite. Was really into the nba, loved everything related to the charlotte hornets, I remeber my dad's friend going to america so I asked him for some hornets gear and he brought me a dolphins jersey and some huge fila shoes.
I liked to skate but I sucked ass so I never bought a nice skate. I remember watching buffy the vampire slayer every friday, she was so hot. I watched clueless on nickelodeon for the same reason, rocko and kenan and kel also on nickelodeon were amazing.
Also loved going to the mall and play crazy taxi at the arcades and also laser shots was the greatest thing ever, I even had my gran buy me laser shot pens that you could play anywhere.

The biggest difference was really that things felt hopeful. A lot of the things that protected the middle class hadn't been revoked yet, all jobs hadn't shipped to mexico/china, and education prices hadn't gotten hiked through the roof yet. You had a chance. Now, people are always ready for it to be "the end" - our economy will implode, ww3 will start, we're all boned - that stuff was fringe. Now, it's the mainstream - I know more people who think we can't fix the climate or economy or industry or whatever than think we can. People weren't always like that.

>still thinking some fuck in a cave could have pulled that off
Woah pic fucking related
1990-1994 just the 80s still winding down. Birth of original Nicktoons (doug, ren and stimpy, rugrats followed by others) 1995-1998 gold gaming years, esp 1998 it was pretty much Nintendos best year ever. 1998-2000 was all "new century we are gonna solve all the problems!" And then 2001 9/11 happened and we have been in the same shithole since.

15 year old detected. Literally none of that was true. Like at every year's music top ten. Its all black. It was the decade black culture became mainstream.

Haha, what the hell
>>708581648
9/11 was one of the biggest overreactions in history. everyone freaking the fuck out is exactly what the terrorists wanted. we should've just increased airport security and been done with it instead of destabilizing the world even further over some bullshit war on terror

To be fair, Bush would have invaded Iraq whether he had an excuse or not. Jut like his pappy.

>black culture became mainstream.
In a positive way.

"He tried to kill my daddy!" - Dubya
What a fucking idiot. Iraq and the Saudis didn't like each other at all, and (as odious as they were) the Ba'athists were at least stable. But nooo, he had to go in like the fucking truthiness-loving cowboy he was and is.

I watched some of that recently, didn't he say his style was hip hop martial arts or something?

Except now people rely solely on their GPS. I know people who can't go anyfuckingwhere unless their GPS tells them to, and even if I say "turn here, it's quicker" they don't because the fucking gps tells them to go a different way...
Fuck.

I still have my Perfect Attendance trophies from junior high
If I had to compare it today, I'd say it was much more laid back. Things were easier going. People weren't as stressed. You didn't have to be so suspicious of everyone. You could depend on your fellow man to be less shady, for the most part.
You could trust your employer to reward your loyalty to a company. The internet hadn't yet dominated every reach of society. Cameras were still separate devices. Bully was restricted to bathrooms and hallways instead of online. People still respected trade schools as a viable option for kids that weren't cut out for college.
But that doesn't mean it was all better. For example, the ability to review products and companies for the world to see has revolutionized how we spend our money and allowed us to choose better.

Better in some ways worse in others.
Fucking payphones everywhere

I went to a community college and now I am in university for a second degree. Unless you are in a political class, no one talks about politics same as before. There was a liberal ad conservative philosophy professors who had fun giving each other shit.
There are no safe spaces, there are no trigger warnings, there are no preferred pronouns.
This might happen at some big universities but nowhere at a normal one.

Glorious Anon. It was glorious.
We had pogs and tomagochi and the rugrats and shitty 8bit dial up porno

Flying was still the coolest shit ever and you could park and walk to the gate with whoever was leaving.
>Terrorists were a joke back then
Idk what kind of neighborhood everyone grew up in but mine had very colorful houses. I'm talking bright ass shit.
I can remember watching farmland turn into giant new houses that all looked alike. Still happening now
But after 2008 all those houses were empty for awhile.
I remember alot more gangster rap bumping from these big ass new things called SUVs.
Biking to the superette for surge and a bubblegum beeper was a great summer activity.
