ITT we educate other anons with information we have learned from our own professions.

If you hold a microphone around the "top" of it, or "cup" it with your hand. You are a fucking tool bag.

Due to the laws of physics "Cup-ing" a microphone not only makes it sound bad, it also increases the chances of feedback.

more gardening tips.

drought is better than an abundance of rain, plants tolerate drought a lot better.

many plants that are sold to you as perennials such as delphiniums hardly ever live longer than a year.

gardening stores flip everything they have by 400%, it's better to order straight from the manufacture.

HDMI is widely regarded by audio visual professionals are the worst connection standard ever produced.

Every device that has a HDMI connection pays money to a consortium for the privilege.

There is an open source professional connection invented in 1989 which can do everything HDMI does,
Costs as little as 30 cents a meter, and can be terminated using basic tools.
And is superior in every way.
Its called SDI and has been in use by TV and Professional Broadcast since its release.

There is NO reason you couldn't have an SDI connection on the back of you xbox or TV if there wasn't some kind of conspiracy going on.

Also never pay more than 10 bucks for a 2-3m HDMI cable.
Anything more and you are being sold snake oil.

as a consumer level, i only had an hdcp issue years ago when watching the netflix app on my original xbox360, everytime i closed the app, id have to manually re-connect the hdmi cord once to get the video to display.
>>
>>708499517
Well you can be running a large screen for a high paying client at a conference. Have all your systems set up and working etc so that you take presentations and videos and you play the content. The guy on stage just has a powerpoint remote.
Then there's always that ONE guy.. That one asshole who turns up and refuses to just save his presentation to a drive and pass it to me and he MUST have his mac on stage with him..

Always ends up the same, mac goes on screen, roughly one seccond later, screen goes black.
Cue me, going crazy getting through boxes looking for shitty chinese hdmi splitters that are so bad that they remove hdcp from the signal.

IE a large concert/show/tv show etc could have its signal pass through a 5$ chinese splitter before going through hundred's of thousands of $'s of screen and control equipment.

Fuck macs and fuck "that guy". Always happens.
>>
>>708499517
Laptop , Apple... cannot output to large scale LED screen as screen is not HDCP compliant.

Convert Satelite box to HD-SDI so cable runs can be 100m+ long without boosting or reclocking... Nope... HDCP...

Video game streamer wants to stream xbox via PC + Webcam etc... nope ... HDCP....

It really never ends.
HDCP is just a nightmare.
>>
>>708498944
A lot of the time, there's no functional difference between the cheap and the expensive, just a different label on it. You're better off if you do your research on the product instead of just having blind faith in expensive being better, and know your rights for returns and refunds in case of failure.

Yeah like I said.. the easiest way to fix is with a shitty 2 output chinese hdmi splitter that is so bad that they didnt implement the hdcp part of the splitter so the result is that it is removed...
The problem being you have to rely on shit chinese electronics for massive shows.

The other option is equipment like the analog way pulse2 which I use a lot at the moment, which lets you get into the menu and disable hdcp.

Dont even think about Kramer gear with macs.. they, on ALL units just block hdcp content no matter what.

give me SDI for video and PC's for computer based content all day long..

Which starts another debate.. PC's ARE better at video content playback I'm a hippotizer owner and operator. I have NEVER seen ANY mac play back video as smoothly as an old v3 hippo. Macs CAN move many many pixels, but never smoothly, video always judders.

If you buy Beats or Bose headphones, you're probably a dumbass.

Want good quality, professional headphones? Get yourself a set of Audio-Technica ATH M50x and/or Sennheiser HD280 Pro monitor headphones.

You'll save yourself a shitload of money, and actually get good sound out of them. Beats and Bose are overpriced as fuck and sound like dog shit compared to the sets mentioned above.

Booking companies rely on your laziness. If you go to each entity (hotel, airline, rental) they are more likely to give you better deals because they rather discount you what they would pay to that company as a commission just to deal with you directly and save the hassle. Or just upgrade you to a more expensive room to clear the cheaper easier sell. But this is more likely booking directly.

When you see cheaper prices it's most of the time presentation (they show you a low amount now online and pay more later at arrival or simply aggregate the costs to others expenses in a package).

Don't ever tell a business you'll talk to your credit card company to get the charges reversed. Just do it and don't give them a head start in the bullshit.

Don't use Haywire blind booking. They have a feature where you enter a price range and a radius in an area where you are looking to stay, and they choose for you. It's a crapshoot. Maybe, you'll get the cheapest room at a fancy hotel, but most likely, you'll end up in the worst location that can't get reservations straight up with Hotwire's help.

Like in Media, there's only about 4-5 actual companies that own all the sites. Expedia owns Orbitz, Hotwire, Cheaptickets, Hotelstonight, Reservations.com, Hotels.com, etc. It's the biggest one. The next one is Booking.com which I recommend due to its ease of use and clarity in presenting information. Those are the biggest ones with Priceline and the rest falling behind.

The customer is always right is a punchline outside the US. Not putting down service around the world, just pointing out how laughable the concept is outside the US.

If you're looking to break out into the social media game (Providing you know what the fuck you're doing) find a local company who hasn't made a profile or seems to be struggling and request to speak to the owner.

Make a real impression and ask for a months volunteering. (Tell jobseekers you're volunteering)

Pull out all the stops (again look it all up) and let them see you're improving the business. Alternatively, tell all your friends to go eat their and say it was cause of facebook etc. when they speak to the waiter (or ask a staff member about the store)

Don't ever buy prebuilt computers, do a bit of research and save a crap load of money while getting better components.

Most meals can be made using a single pan or pot, put what's done on your plate if you have to mix it up later. Save lots of dishing this way.

If something takes 5 minutes to do, just do it immediately and don't procrastinate. You'll feel a lot better and less stressed in the end.

When talking about a subject you don't know very well, don't pretend to be an expert, you're just making a fool of yourself. It's better to just agree with whatever the others are saying.

I bought a cheap gaming laptop pretty much because it wasn't being marketed as a gaming laptop. Had the exact specs as an Alienware one in the same shop, even the same graphics card, except it was $500 cheaper. I spilled beer all over it and thought I was fucked. Took it back into the retailer even though I knew for a fact it wasn't a warranty job and it turns out the laptop came with a six month, no questions asked, free replacement period. So they replaced it then and there. Not only that but since it had been four months they gave me my money back for the cost difference. They literally paid for four months of depreciation.

I'm not sure what Alienware's warranty was like, but I can't imagine it had a six month free replacement period. In my experience that's completely unheard of.

When ordering food for your date, yodel instead

When applying for a job interview smell your underarms and then start to laugh

before exiting the elevator, push all the buttons

see if you can use the word 'gristle' in every sentence
honk your horn at every red light
when other people tell jokes, start to cry
announce when you are going to the bathroom
tell your boss that he or she smells like a magnet
walk very slowly and make sure that no-one can pass you

fart in cramped places and say 'I knew that was gonna happen'
instead of shaking someone's hand, lick it
leave the copy machine set to enlarged, extra dark, 17" paper, 99 copies
sit in your yard, pointing a hairdryer at passing cars to see if they slow down
specify that your drive-thru order is 'to go'
adjust the tint on your TV so that all the people are green and insist to others that you like it that way
ask people what gender they are
sneeze in public then wipe your hands on anyone that says 'bless you'
at the library, staple everything together
Repeat the following conversation a dozen times:
"Do you hear that?"
"What?"
"Never mind, it's gone now."
Hide dairy products in inaccessible places
Write the surprise ending to a novel on its first page
Buy large quantities of mint dental floss just to lick the flavor off
Leave someone's printer in compressed-italic-cyrillic-landscape mode.
Write "X - BURIED TREASURE" in random spots on all of someone's roadmap
Follow a few paces behind someone, spraying everything they touch with a can of Lysol.
Finish all your sentences with the words "in accordance with prophesy."
Ask the waitress for an extra seat for your "imaginary friend."
Incessantly recite annoying phrases, such as "sticky wicket isn't cricket."
Teach pet store parrots new words that makes them unsalable.
Save McDonald's ketchup packets to slurp. Tell people that they're "astronaut food."
Ask the clerk at the drugstore which leading cold stuff will give you a really wicked buzz.

Not quite. Although I guess in part it depends on what kind of doctor you are planning on being. Some skills that are physical require manual training combined with an understanding of the underlying structures and physiology. Even for gen med the training is for a broad understanding of systems. Your internet search isn't exactly worthless but it's incomplete. The training is for risk mitigation. On the other hand most people I see don't really have that many complicated problems and could be treated as well by a shaman. Good docs know what they know and more importantly what they don't know.

Not many of those. Most docs I've seen, and I live in an area with a very high concentration of medical "professionals", are a bunch of rich pricks. They went to medical school because their family has money. But they're no smarter than I am. I'm just an underachiever. The best docs are old country docs who don't coddle the fuck out of their patients, don't take bribes from pharma reps, and feel self-important. That's why I say it's an overrated profession. you realize that the purpose of doctors isnt to diagnose the common stuff, its to know what to do about the uncommon stuff.
thats why Nurse practitioners exist. they handle all the simple mundane stuff

thats also why GPs exist, so they can screen the general population for any obscure issues that may be brushed off as something minor. for example, constant itching over the shins could indicate lymphoma. it dosent most of the time, but its one of the earliest signs of non-hodgekins mediastinal lymphoma.

specialists get paid shitloads too for good reason.
surgeons get paid because they are skilled. that is a no brainer.

other specialists, like neurology get paid due to their expertise in the field. there are some conditions so rare that its not often dealt with in literature, and its up to these people to deal with the more obscure conditions.
thats why they get paid shitloads.

if someone's heart stops beating u must not use a defibrillator it actually reduces the chance of the heart to get back a rythm.

IRL defibrillators are used to reset a desynced heartrythm like ventricular fibrillation.

good luck that AED (defibrillators for public use by nonprofessionals) decide upon an own evaluation of an ECG if a shock might be suitable or not

yeah. thats why they get the mundane stuff.
They're trained to recognise signs of deterioration and call the doctors.

the doctors are trained to administer management, which is why the higher salary.

on that note:

if you ever go to an outpatient appointment at a hospital, turn up early. as in, if you are in the afternoon, turn up at about 1:30. if you are in the morning, turn up at 9:30ish.
the appointment times are more guidelines for the doctors, and if you turn up first, they may just see you instead of whoevers in the slot. also sometimes people cancel and that spare time gets used to see patients early.

if you ever sprain/fracture your ankles or knees, even if you can weight bear on it, dont. when you go to ED just say you cant walk at all on it. you're more likely to get investigated more thoroughly (i.e. X-rays as opposed to sending you home). sometimes with symptoms consistent with a sprain, you may actually fracture your ankle, and it gets misdiagnosed because they didnt bother with an x-ray when they evaluated you to not need one clinically.

Be honest about what drugs you've taken.

If you plan on applying for the army/firefighter/police force, dont let your medical record at the hospital label you with conditions you may or may not have.
an example would be asthma. some people have it bad, others have it mild, some have whats called post-viral wheeze which is treated the same as asthma and gets labeled as such. but if you apply for any of the above, it will hurt your chances as soon as they see the word asthma, because they dont really care about how bad it is.
thus if you go to the hospital and they ask for your past medical history, feel free to skimp over the less important stuff. this applies for things like anxiety/depression too

LED lights consume 80%-90% less electricity than incandescent lights. This means for every dollar you spend on electricity for incandescents, you would spend $0.10 for LEDs. Also, LED lights have an insane life compared to incandescents. So, when you buy your Christmas lights this year, pay more for LEDs up front so you can use them longer and save more.

thats because the older doc has the clinical accumen to know when something needs to be done and when something can be omitted.
younger docs lack that, and hence do more to cover all basis because they dont have the experience.

an example would be when a 30ish year old female patient presents with a 5 month history of fatigue and lethargy.

the possible common things are stuff like anaemia, low vitamin D levels, depression.
the rarer stuff are cancer, tuberculosis, hypo/hyperthyroidism.

the older doctor knows that common things are common, so orders vitamin D levels, a blood count, and enquires as to any changes in the last 5 months of living/working/social conditions.

the younger doctor also knows the common things, but chooses to screen for the rarer stuff because they never seen a previous presentation of cancer and thus has it higher in their list of likely causes. therefore asking more questions with regards to organic issues like weight loss, tremors, constipation/diarrhoea, fevers, etc. etc.
they then go on to order a comprehensive barrage of tests like breast ultrasounds, chest x-rays, faecal occult blood tests, thyroid function tests in addition to the common stuff like vit D, bloods, etc. etc.

even though they both end up in the same place, the latter is more time and resource consuming and subjects the patient to more procedures.

your new doctor isnt just more comprehensive, shes also lacking in experience. remember that and never forget to get a second opinion if you are ever in doubt

ex-alienwhore owner here

I bought one of their gaming laptops back in 2014, and it was the worst purchase I've made so far in my life. Cost me $1500, all for a product with less functionality than a macbook, I'm being serious.

Let me start off with the bloatware, it had probably 6 bloat programs that would run at startup and eat 4GB(laptop only has 8GB) of RAM and max the CPU. If you disabled/ended one of these bloat programs from running(some Genuine Dell Service or some shit), the laptop would blue screen on startup(causing a crash cycle that would require booting to safe mode to fix). So the laptop always had 1GB of RAM sucked up by DellSrvc, not counting the 1GB Windows already takes.

On top of that, there was no way to disable this stupid Alienware update feature, and every time it would update, it would re-enable all the bloatware to run at startup.

The only thing worse was the hardware itself, the keys were so damn flimsy and were too easily pulled off, the edge border-filling around the screen started to come out after a month, and the battery wiggled and sat loose, so i had to keep it taped on to prevent it from falling out. This bitch ran hot as fuck too, the cooling for the CPU and GPU was so damn inadequate and ran loud too.

My games often crashed or ran like shit despite them being able to run better on older, inferior hardware. So what fuckin gives? I decided to use some monitoring software to see usages of the laptop's resources. I found that CPU 0 was always at 80% or higher, even when idling, the most graphically-demanding game I had on it(Skyrim modded to the balls) wouldn't make the GPU go over 50%, and the frame rate in every game would lock to 45.

After 2 months of that shit, I got rid of the damn thing and got a MSI gaming laptop instead. Cool thing is, it cost less, had better specs, better build quality, AND ACTUALLY FUCKING WORKS.

its cheap, but the purpose of a gaming laptop is to play games, i.e. needs a decent graphics card.

those update faster than intel releases CPUs, so odds are in 2-3 years the inbuilt card would be obsolete and by proxy, your laptop would be obsolete needing you to buy another one to keep up.

plus its uncomfortable as fuck. the screen is small, you need to lug a mouse around with you at all times, you have to think about battery life etc. etc.

Former financial bro here..

Almost all the people you speak with for help with financial matters are full of shit. They are pushing products that more often then not underperform compared to what you could do yourself by reading a book or two.

Buying a low cost indexed fund to follow the market as a whole is the best retirement plan for 95% of north Americans. Anyone claiming better is almost guaranteed to be statistically full of shit over the long term.

Financial advisors are salesmen first. No matter how they present themselves. It is always in your best interest to fact check their claims. Unless you're into exotic or risky shit with extra money.. They are an unnecessary expense.

Life insurance exists only to cover a potential financial loss. It was never designed a a savings vehicle. Those cash reserves are often inaccessible as they are meant to offset the rising cost of insurance as you age so your premiums don't increase. Buy terms of insurance to cover timeframes in your life. 2Oy for a kid.. 25y for a mortgage.. Etc. You'll save a ton of money. If you're smart you'll sock those savings into an account.

Always ask what an advisor would be paid for products they offer. If they push one over the other it is most often the commision.

Don't listen to bank tellers for advise.
They are min wage and don't know any more than what they are told to sell that week.

Never sign a loan without reading the full fucking terms and understanding or having it reviewed by a lawyer.
A couple hundred bucks if you need it explained by someone unbiased is better then thousands or tens of thousands later for signing ignorantly.

I could rant forever.. I quit the industry a few years back. It's all horseshit.

Like, yeah, can you maybe invest in one company and that company just so happens to go to the moon and you make 30% ? Sure it can happen. Can you do that consistently? Probably not. And long-term? An indexed fund is your best, safest bet really.

Never buy a midi pad or especially a "top of the line arcade button midi controller" especially if it costs upwards of 100 dollars. You can build it in an afternoon for no more than 30 dollars and often times it will be higher quality and will be closer to your heart.
If you go to instructables or youtube for this you can find the source code for free and you can just copy paste it and change 3 variables.

This is actually great advice, sets marketed for "gaming" are generally terrible regardless of price.
In ear phones with custom moulded inserts made by an audiologist and a separate mic have proven in my experience to be the very best for gaming and general music listening.
Another thing to consider is your output, the sound output on your motherboard is lousy and even outboard sound cards are generally not much better, use a USB dac instead with a headphone output for a huge improvement in sound quality.
Personally, I'd recommend something like the JDS labs standalone ODAC along with your 'phones of choice and a cheap outboard mic which would give excellent results for modest cash.

I tried for a year before having to make the choice of screwing people to survive or put my pride aside and maintain my integrity. So.. I asked a couple good clients if their companies had openings.
Left for a purchasing manager role that payed 20% less overall.. But the stress relief was more than worth it

These collapses aren't usually a surprise either. The subprime fiasco was seen years before it happened. Canada braced for it after it happened in England. The U.S. watched the freight train coming while standing on the tracks and politely waved as it struck them down.

Worst thing I saw near the end was trusted advisors going to old clients and convincing them yo take out home equity lines of credit to fund universal life insurance policies. So fucking illegal and unscrupulous. Irreversible loss of equity and "investment" as those things basically steal your cash. Massive commissions though. I'm talking $10k-$20k over five years. I almost got into a fist fight with another advisor in a parking lot over this shit. If I didn't leave the industry I would have gone on a shotgun rampage for the greater good.

30% is highly speculative investing. Just as likely to lose 30%.. More if leveraged.

both true, my advise is to invest in index-tracking ETFs, see below

The less money you have to invest, the more expensive it is for you to do it through any kind of financial advisor (be it insurance company, bank or private wealth manager). Whenever any of those people tell you that you can expect x% return on average, cut that number in half and you're probably pretty close to the truth.

Probably the most reasonable investment is to put your money in a diversified variety of funds.

Example: investing 100.000$ in a mutual fund you will pay 0-5% agio/entry charge/front load commission and a 0.1%-2% yearly management fee, both based on your investment sum. This means an expensive Fund (not good, just expensive!) will cost you 7.000$ before anything even happens with your money.

Of this money 100% of the "front load" and 33-66% of the "management fee" will be paid as commissions to the wealth manager who convinced you to buy this fund. Wealth managers are thus incentivized heavily to sell you VERY EXPENSIVE FUNDS. They may perform well, they may perform shit but they will almost always be expensive.

This is where ETFs come in. Those are very large, passively managed funds that perform exactly like an index that they track. They perform reasonably well but most importantly are extremely cheap.
http://www.investopedia.com/terms/e/etf.asp

A good example is the famous "Spider" or SPDR S&P 500 ETF, which costs as little as 0.9% management fee a year, without any front load commission.
http://etfdb.com/etf/SPY/

Traditional mutual funds not only have to outperform the index (which most don't in a consistent manner) but the additional costs aswell.

Hope this helped someone.

Fish, shrimp, and squid. Seems like more seafood rastaurants in my area have even started selling alligator lately. Sushi places typically have eel as well. Frog as well but that was mentioned earlier.

Land animal wise- turkey, duck, bison, quail, deer.

If you're slicing cheese it's better to slice of the first piece and discard it due to it being dryer than the rest of the block.

Youre making a real cheese sauce for the Mac and cheese you're serving. When you're done, simply rinse the pan and fill it with hot water. It makes it much easier to clean at a later time.

Always be aware of hand placement. Or pic related happens. Lost a portion of my right thumb. Almost cut to the bone but I was lucky enough not to do any damage to that. I have no sensation of hot or cold on that angled side nor can I feel much of anything. Im aware I'm touching something and only really ever feel something if it's sharp.

invest that money to find a good job or just go on a short holiday

Do your dishes are you go.

When you have a bowel of yogurt in the morning for breakfast, rinse/wash it out with hot waster and immediately dry and put it away.

This stops a pile forming.

Any pile of shit in your house automatically attracts more shit to the pile, and in flat out no time you will have a massive pile of shit you need to clean up and put away.

If you put a smaller box inside another bigger box thats twice the size of the original box and the box weighs like 70lbs... Go fuck yourself and just ship the original box instead of being boxtistic.

Also make sure to tape your boxes shut by wrapping tape all around the box instead of just covering the flaps. It makes it more likely to break open and puts more stress on us to tape it back up again or have the box contents spill all over the place.

Set a timer to water it twice a week a few hours before the sun comes up, ideally you want to lay down drip irrigation about 30cm/1' underground to train the grass to grow deep roots and become more drought resistant.
There are also a few other factors like drainage, fertilisation and the variety of grass you're growing, but watering and mowing properly will go a long way to improve your turf in most cases.
Tbh, lawns are terrible and waste a lot of nutrients. rye grass, dq mulch buckwheat and other cover crops are far better and can actually improve the soil and enable you to grow crops in that soil.

Yes. You get paid well, it's an evolving field, you can get your name on papers and have findings attributed to your team. It's an amazing feeling. It's hard work though.

My father is an electrician. He likes it alot, gotta have tough hands or you're gonna hate it though. He'd come home with like fucking gouges in his hands simply due to how angular machine guts tend to be. Sharp corners and lots of protruding bits and pieces. He got is start fixing planes on a carrier though so his training may be way way different than whats offered these days.

DO NOT PRE PURCHASE GAMES.

Wait till the game comes out and is reviewed. This way you can see if the game is as promised. Watch_Dogs was nerfed to shit. No Man's Lie was just that.

STOP SUPPORTING EARLY ACCESS GAMES!

had a consulting project at a major life-insurance company and we found out that for those products only roughly 80% of the investment sum actually gets invested into mostly bond funds (which have very low returns) but meanwhile the fucking insurance brokers tell clients that "6% return on investment a year is easily achievable"

Yeah that would be way more lucrative, or if you still want kinda-physics you could try nuclear engineering as well, but that's a pretty intensive program. Although if you don't mind an even more brutally intensive program, you can go into the Navy as a nuke tech, and get the schooling for free (monetarily free at least). After a 18 month training school you'll be like 95% done with a nuke tech program which is actually transferable to some colleges including MIT. You'll only need to get like 9 more credit hours to graduate.
