Until 1800s, Finland was part of Sweden, yes. That's not to say we didn't have our own culture, folklore, art etc. Under the Russians we developed culturally into an even more refined people since we were autonomous. When Russia tried to suppress us in the early 1900s, we broke free and declared independence in 1917. Russians set us up as the aggressor to the winter war in 1939 by actually firing on themselves and used it as an excuse to invade. Finns pushed them back to the previous border and pushed into Russian territory, claiming control of relatively vast swathes of land. The conflict continued and we lost all support of the rest of the world so we were forced to give back the taken ground and more to get some sort of peace arranged. Essentially we stopped the red machine from rolling over sweden, norway and the rest of europe.
