Well, in terms of Karma, it is.
The buddhist final goal is to reach Nibbana (where you just cease to exist, no more reincarnation), not going back to be a chicken after your death.
There's about 30 differents levels of Karma/possible reincarnation, human stage is about number 5 or 6 on the list, and the first step who can hear about all of that; which is why it's an important step, that's about it.
