>>
>>708230241
I didn't think it relied too much on stand-up style. For me it felt like a decent Saturday Night Live sketch stretched for 90 or so minutes. The characters were flat stereotypes, but at its heart it's a comedy so there's no real need to do anything super nuanced.

IIt has the same tone/humor as The Office, The Heat, and Bridesmaids. If you enjoyed any of those, you'll probably find something to like in GB.

Also, the cg ghosts were legitimately frightening looking, almost akin to the ghosts in Crimson Peak.

What is the pseudo artistic home way of thinking?
And HOW does it take advantage of the "wanna-be deep?" furthermore, does that refer to the audience, critics, or movie characters themselves?

It was reasonably true to the book, and the reality of what colonization of Mars would entail.

The only real stopping point is that you wouldn't be able to grow SHIT in Martian soil without like 100 years of bacterial prep. Human poop is bad fertilizer and doesn't offset the devastating levels of perchlorates in the dirt.

And the basic premise of the movie, where the crew abandoned the base because of a storm when

1. Mars doesn't have shit for weather because its atmosphere is super thin, which means the wind wouldn't be nearly strong enough to knock down a tethered spacecraft.
2. They'd never risk taking off in less than perfect weather conditions, or risk taking off outside of schedule.

That old as dirt film "A Trip to the Moon" from like 1903.

Not even looking up a picture for reference because I dislike it so much. Ranted and raved about by film-fags for being revolutionary since it was made so long ago... I understand the "value" as it pertains to film history, but that doesn't mean it's good.

The backmasked music and overall look make it the most unsettling thing to watch. It's like a real life Ring video for me; as if the whole thing was never intended to be recorded and seen in the future, but it was.

Deerhunter. Might rustle a few jimmies with my choice, but I watched it with high hopes.
It was crap.

Big Trouble In Little China. Watched it last week, I kind of remember people saying it was great, maybe they were trolls. It was crap.

Pulp Fiction. Good when it came out, we pretty much all liked it. But now it's aged and a new generation of kids think it's some kind of classic. It's crap.

Oh and that fucking Clooney film where he's floating about in space having visions or some shit. Worst movie ever. So bad I've forgotten what happens but not how shit it was.

Inception. Yes I think I 'get it', no it doesn't make it any less crap. Over complicated nonsense.

It's weird and, again, unsettling.
I happened to see the first 3-5 minutes again when I saw the colorized version was on Netflix and wanted to show my buddy.

Fairly certain it was a completely silent film originally, but for some reason with this updated one they put in backmasked fucked up music. Sounds like subliminal messages and voices of ghosts mixed together...

Really surprised more people aren't put off by this movie. My friend I showed it to wouldn't watch more than the first few minutes just like me tho. Said it looked like it would make you possessed by demons if you watched it all.

Both the godfather and schindler's list are fairly old and while genre defining yes people now find them bland because of slower pacing, that is a perfectly valid reason to not like something.

If they defined a genre there's no possible way for them the be overrated which is the basis of this thread.

>>
>>708240214
Okay just because they defined a genre doesn't stop the reddit tier circle jerk spoiling the viewing experience.

The Godfather is a good one, people beleive that it's some kind of god tier crime drama and that could be beaten by nothing, when that is simply not true. I personally was not a fan of it myself but I still enjoy a good crime drama like Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. The film can no longer live up to the circle jerk hype. Doesn't help we are on 4chan and most of the people here are probably about 20 therefore can't avoid the shitfest

>>708240612
That's not what I mean, modern audiences are more used to a faster editing style, modern changes camera angles more than older films do. Even a slow dialogue scene will swap between angles quite a bit. Modern ciemna also includes more camera movements. Even subtle things like colour correction can change the way an audience perceives the tone of a film

It's clearly not an issue with the films themselves but the autists of a modern era. I'm 22 and i recognize the fact that most people are so constantly over stimulated that unless you have fireworks going off in front of their eyes ever half a second they lose interest. So it's not a problem with the films themselves but with an over stimulated, sated generation of people who need constant excitement otherwise they go insane.

>Also checkd
>>
>>708240666
umm im gonna have to flip that on you. there are people who think that these films are over rated for how much people talk about that. that is there personal preference. just like its your personal preference to think they are good. we are just here to voice out opinions.
>>
>>708241013
It's not a problem with the modern era, and it is not a case of over stimulation.

if you were to make a poker scene, you could shoot it MS EL toward the game with your main character taking center frame, cut to some MCU LA shots of the players to show emotions and then maybe a pan down to a pistol on the bad guys hit and that would be fine and good but not very visually appealing.

However if you swapped out those jump cuts for say tracking poker chips moving across the table then pan up to your player. As the game becomes more intense and heated the editing becomes faster to reflect the nature of situation. In doing this you create more flow in your scene and becomes more apealing to the eye. I am probably explaining it badly but that's the kind of stuff that you see in modern cinema, they often have more flow

You know what? Empire Strikes Back would be my choice.

You go to the original trilogy and A New Hope, was by MILES the best.

To me, Empire Strikes Back was probably the worst of the original trilogy. Lamest plot, lame pacing (do you actually remember how long and dull the hoth sequence was), and a problem with nearly every Star Wars. TERRIBLE acting.

That being said, I love all Star Wars, but I rewatched the originals and I was surprised at how shitty Empire Strikes Back was. Honestly, the other two are better.

Empire strikes back is a completely different flavor than the prequels but probably equal in quality. A bit better in plot with much shittier battles and effects.

And while we're at it, the prequels were perfectly okay Star Wars movies. I think they were pretty great movies. But not the best.

A New Hope and Force Awakens were the best of them.

Empire is respected for it's script, since every moment of it has people and events propelled forward by what just happened and into what is about to happen.
Not all movies have this. I read an awesome essay by Umberto Eco where he used Casablanca to explain semiotics to students. Nothing in that movie follows anything else, it's a floating mish-mash of signals that you've seen before. It's a classic movie and people love it, but it's the opposite of Empire Strikes Back because every event is without context.
That's why i need good critics, i enjoy some shitty movies sometimes.

Every time I watched Empire Strikes Back (I was a very young child when it came out) from when I was a kid to when I was an adult, I always wind up sort of bored with a headache. Then I tend to household chores or something in the dull parts. The pacing of that movie was fucked, granted you see that a lot in old movies (the pacing is much slower in old movies than new movies for modern tastes).

It's the only Star Wars movie that's like that.

I would almost go so far as to say I don't like that one, but there are cool scenes with Jabba, a few on hoth, a few in cloud city, but for the most part they're rare and *very* spread out.

Really it's only redeeming trait (and it's a big one) is the fact that it fleshed out the Star Wars universe quite a bit more and created a lot of the lore than any new Star Wars production builds upon.

But as a standalone movie, very very very average. The weakest of the 7 in my opinion when everyone always claims it's the greatest.

I mean the best telling of the hero's journey ever put on film, some of the highest quality production in any movie ever before you even get to the brilliant acting, flawless screenplay and beautiful cinematography and perfect score. Any one of these alone does not make a great film, but it has all of them. Every aspect of each film is executed to absolute perfection. Fellowship is in my top 5 of all time, the other two in my top 10 or 15 at a push.
Only a 4 year old with ADD could find those three movies boring. (The Hobbit movies sucked before anybody brings that up)

There are some movies that are very very very much a product of their times, but in a good way. But had you have not existed or been aware enough in that era, you may not dig the style and general vibe of the movie that catches the feel of that era perfectly.

Cultures can become so different in a couple of decades that it's fascinating when a movie captures the tiny thousands of small cultural differences and the talking points of a different time.

Lebowski was made in the late 90s but it captured the vibe of like 90-92 perfectly. To the point that it actually time warps most of us back. The only other movie that gave you as strong of a nostalgic timewarp is Donnie Darko which also has very mixed reviews. Mostly people who didn't live through the 80s don't tend to "get" the vibe.

Also, that movie has hilarious natural dialogue, it actually has the chaos of real conversation rather than the overly-contrived Hollywood script lines.

tl;dr Youngfags don't get it

No. It's overrated, overwrought, with lackadaisical pacing, excruciatingly padded (especially in the second film, which I actually had to take a nap in the middle of), and just doesn't know when to fucking end.

That's a good movie you retard

Even a fucking nazi should see its merit

The Hobbit being a tiny single book meant more of it made it to the movie, more character depth - without having to refer to book knowledge, more Tolkein in the various tunes sung and the stark difference between the Elves and Dwarves. LOTR was great but it typically delved fairly shallowly trying to cover a fuckload of ground.

I didn't get that at all, loved every second of them all. I thought the pacing was spot on, felt like it gradually built to a brilliant payoff that was only ameliorated by the long wait to get there. Fucking loved them.

Oh well, each to their own I guess!

>It's the only Star Wars movie that's like that.
Yeah it tried to do the New Hope thing of splitting a group into two streams and jumping back and forth, it had a lot to get done. You're right, it had old-school pacing.
Movies started to get fast about 1997, with shaky camera, awesome stuff like in Fight Club where the camera travels through vents and drains and walls in a smooth way so people miss it, or even the hand-held thing, which can get annoying.
Now we get visually exhausting stuff like the Transformers / Ninja Turtles action scenes that has crazy detail and too much happening. So a new source of headaches maybe?

I get what you're saying, but I actually felt like I knew more of the characters from LOTR than the Hobbit by the end. Take the 9 Fellowship guys for example, you got to know them quite well whereas the Dwarves in the Hobbit barring the main 4 (and Jimmy Nesbitt for some reason) were interchangeable.

>awesome war movie
>Hanks gets shot by the guy he lets go
>cheesy corny schmaltzy ending gets tacked on
>because corn and cheese
You know what you get when you take the corn and cheese out of a Hollywood movie, as well as 30% of the dialogue?
Answer is: the European/Australian/Japanese movie it was a copy of, usually.

Agreed. Truth be told, I'm not a big fan of the Fantasy genre. It always seems super hokey to me.

Well, I'd say every decade movies got much faster paced. Not just movies. But tv and books this applies to also.

So I think sometimes when we try to watch a classic movie, even one that is good, we can find ourselves bored in the dialogue and detours.

But Star Wars is meant to be a high action space thriller. The slow pace of Empire fucks that up.

If I would have been alive back in 79, I would be lamenting the fact that the second Star Wars movie wasn't even comparable to the first.

I agree with that actually, other than LOTR and Game of Thrones I don't think any of it translates to the screen particularly well
>>
>>708244986
Aye but the 9 of the fellowship, generally, had massive differences to define them so less detail was required, to achieve that with the dwarves it all needed to be more subtle which is ironic given that they were dwarves. You also get a lot more of the bad guys in the Hobbit than in LOTR, large sections were dedicated to Azog, Smaug and even Saruman.

Watch the original japanese version. Personally I don't like any, but you might.

GoT is pretty fantastic. It helps that it's a long-form narrative cut up in manageable, easily digested bits.
>>
>>708245430
Can't argue with that at all to be honest, though I do think Saruman got a good amount of time in LOTR (even though he was cut from the 3rd).

I felt like what character development did happen in the Hobbit just wasn't stuff I liked, such as the tacked on love story. Personal preferences I suppose, but there you go

Agreed about the love story for sure and yeah in Tolkeins writing dwarves generally weren't likeable.
