Anyone answering with a single weapon is a pleb or a fantasy/rpg monkey with no idea of actual history.
Weapons are tools for killing people. Each tool is made for a specific situation and has a use. A polearm is good if you are on foot and fighting enemies clad in plate. If you are fighting on horseback you'd use a lance and a mace or longsword. If you are fighting in a confined space: narrow alleyways, city streets, castle staircases, you'd want a short sword, perhaps with a buckler.
Also, if you are participating in a pitched battle between two armies you should have a VERY good reason not to be sporting a shield.

If you are minion #2756 of your lord's army, with decent battle formations, then yes, a pole arm would be an excellent choice.

Im gonna have to say the M6 with traditional accoutrements. Its a good quality blade with a distinct reach advantage in that its attached to an automatic rifle. Nothing said period correct melee weapons.
I'd be to much of a pussy to fight with a sword, so I'd probably just hide around the back and edges of fights and shoot a crank crossbow. I'd have armour piercing arrows for armoured heathens and barbed arrows for non-armoured heathens.

so I'd go with a 15th C german longsword solely on grounds of familiarity.
However, if it were a real combat, I'd make damn sure I have a harness of plate, and a pollaxe or lucerne hammer, to maximise my survival chances, even though I'm not as experienced with them.

Yes any spear type weapon or pole arm. Backup short swords were used often or knifes and shields were used too but it was a surprisingly effective weapon. If they caught it then sorry dude you're fucked unless the sword comes out but if they didn't catch it the range and quick changes in stabbing distance, angle and direction made it nasty for taking out legs not armored or protected.

Oh fuck yes it could. And if you look at the rotella, a 14th or 15th century personal shield made of steel, maybe two feet across (not the tower type) you find it's actually pretty light. Not much more than 14ga. steel - armor could be way thicker. And a shield like that isn't meant to stop blows, so much as give you a big ass parrying surface. I could punch through a rotella with a pollaxe without much effort.

HEMAfag here. One weapon would not be enough, as there a lot of different enviroments and situations you can fight in. If, let's say, it is a duel in an open space, a Kriegsmesser is ideal.
If it is two armies clashing together, a spear, or halberd would do the job.
If I can choose multiple weapons, I would choose a simple polearm, an arming sword and buckler, with minimal armor.

You don't have to get immediately defensive about it. We all know Japan existed during the same time period. It was definitely one of the best slashing weapons of it's time, or EVER.
That being said, their curved nature and light thin build makes them poor choices for lunging and stabbing. A skilled lancer or spearman would have trouble dealing with a katana user if they got too close, but at longer distances they'd have an advantage over a katana.

Problem is the professional armies that won consistently tended to fight in formations and not run into battle. That gives you shield and spear, polearm, or short swords depending on your ranks. Add spears and bows for range. One on one soldiers in formations are going to beat your warriors running into battle.
