It began as a fantasy boardgame in which you had to build and paint your own army and compete against someone elses., combined with a shitload of lore and fantasy books. In the noughties it turned into an RTS videogame series, which were great. And since then there's loads of different types of games.
There are two versions though, the first one is plainly called "Warhammer", which is set in the midieval era with knights, vampires, orcs dwarves and shit like that. The second one is called Warhammer 40K which is set in the far future.
The books are great, the games are okay, and the boardgame was a lot of fun when I was younger.

It started relatively long ago ( 1983 ) and it keeps renovating itself, which makes for long-time fans. There are countless books, which makes for a massive amount of lore heaps of characters and many different ways to enjoy this franchise. With the most recent addition to the tabletop series( Age of Sigmar ) mostly marketing to younger people. Games Workshop really knows how to market and co-operate with other companies. They worked together with the creators of the Total War franchise, which is a massively popular game, to create a version concerning the original Warhammer series.

No need to read the lore before playing the vidya.
I suggest you start with the Dawn of War series. I'd recommend Dawn of War : Soulstorm. IMO one of the best futurustic RTS games on the market.
It also introduces you to a couple of the most popular "races" in the entire franchise, which helps if you want to play more of the games.

True true. On the note of RPGs. Have you seen any of the Eisenhorn Xenos trailers? Based off the books of the same name. It looks kinda Batman Arkhamy from the one game play one I saw but that was a while ago too.

I need to apologize to you. Eisenhorn is out and I found a review. It's a mobile game that was ported onto Steam. I've failed you battle brother.
I can't wait for DoW3, I hope it plays more like DoW 1 and not the like.. I don't even know what to call DoW2 it's a decent game by all means and I can see why it's fun but it's suuuuuch a drastic change that I personally felt like I wasn't even playing a dawn of war game at the point.

I'm a bit torn over it to be honest. DoW1 was the shit, in every way possible. But DoW2 came with SO many RPG elements which was pretty neat too.
I have to say however, that I really did miss building massives bases and armies to crush filthy xenos with.

I actually enjoyed Dark Crusade a lot more than Soulstorm for some reason.
The first time i played Soulstorm i spent 45 minutes building the perfect impenetrable fortress so i could fuck around a bit if atacked and then died a bit inside when it didnt save my shit fun times
