Well, I do not live in the US. I wanted to get a gun about 5 years ago so I started reading on the gun law and figured out how I generally am not allowed to use a gun out of the shooting range. The bow was a perfect replacement however.

One thing I've been taught through my gun group is that you have to be in fear for your life and in imminent risk of harm. If an intruder is in your home and you have your bow and you shoot him the second you see him, you will be screwed.
At that point, you do not know if he has a weapon, you do not know if he has your property, and you do not know if be will cause you any harm, he could very well just run away.

I own a Mossberg Maverick 88 (economy version of the 500) 12g shotgun.
I spent a lot of time researching and weighing out what I needed, and a shotgun really fit the bill the most. Unmatched for home defense with 00 Buck shells, capable of hunting with a rifled slug, and fun to play with at the range with bird shot.
I live in NJ, which hates guns as much as California does. You can not get a license to carry at all, so it didn't need to be a hand gun. We're a castle doctrine with duty to retreat. If someone breaks in, you have to prove that 1. the intruder threatened your life, and 2. you attempted to get away from them and had no choice but to fire.
AND, the reason an AR rifle didn't meet my needs, is that it's illegal to use a rifle in home defense in this state, because of over penetration. So, an AR-style rifle wouldn't be any good.
