i doubt you can come up with more than that

I find Shawshank Redemption to be deeply overrated. I know, this could just as well be an

>>
>>708066266
All I'm asking is where is the line for a great movie? It's overly opinionated. Once the line is placed I might agree. Scale of 1 to 10 possibly?
>>
>>708065117
>this
Anyone who says this is better than 7/10 is autismo extremo. I watched it once after I "had to see it" it was good but it wasn't that good.
>>
>>708066598
Loved all of those movies, very original in their own ways, all of movies listed so far were original. That's what I enjoyed.

I cannot really contribute to this thread since I haven't seen any of these popular movies.

>The Godfather 1-3
>Any horror movie in general
>>
>>708065999
i want to get triggered by fight club and matrix but i guess i have to respect those trips since all those movies are sooooooooo massively hyped

>>708066656
>>708066839
yes, agree. i'd give it a 6, purely because it was SO FUCKING HYPED OMFG PULP FICTION OMFG DOOD SO FKIN GOOD. that's literally how people referred to it when i told them i hadn't seen it yet. objectively it MIGHT be a 7 on a really good day if i was really drunk and probably smoking weed too
>>
>>708066907
maybe I'm just a dumbass, but Donnie Darko twisted my dick 360 degrees and walked away
>>
To stay with the Tarantino theme : Kill Bill, Especially the first. Not saying that it's a bad movie, but I think it's not as refined and perfectly put together as other Tarantinos. I also notice that boy Quentin likes to redefine laws of physics for art's sake, but there's definitely an abuse of those in this movie...

if you watch one film on that list it should be Pirates of the Carribbean Black Pearl
it's a totally cliche romantic view of what a pirate is, and it's absolutely brilliant at being completely unoriginal

>bait
>actually thinking tarantino movies are good and not cucked versions of stolen films
http://www.businessinsider.com/quentin-tarantino-stolen-movie-scenes-2015-6
Here's how you make a Tarantino flick.

1. Pick up a popular topic/genre
2. Find famous movie scenes
3. Cuck and pack in niggers as hero characters
4. Use 0 originality
5. Use a gimic so people can defend your work as "unique"
6. Leave in bad acting as a "feature"
7. Rinse and repeat.

The only film of his I used to like was RD until I found out he stole a Japanese film with the same plot and major scenes, even the 3 way Mexican stand off.

tl;dr
If you like his movies and defend them, you're basically defending store brand soda over name brand without realizing the store brand is a shit tier knock off
>>
>>708067086
For PF I'd give it at least an 8. Great actors, rewatch value, great cult classic in its own fucked up way.

I know what you mean. It irritates me how he even refers uses the word "homage" and claims how other works are derived from preexisting works. However, you probably have to admit that regardless of the "inspirations" for his movies, they are good movies for the most part. Even if other writers/directors had made an English-language remake of City on Fire, do you think that it would have been as good or entertaining as Reservoir Dogs?
If you were to tell other writers and directors to pick and choose story elements from other movies to create a whole movie (basically what Tarantino does -- he samples a bassline from one song, vocals from another, a guitar riff from this one et cetera), they would probably not do it as well as Tarantino.
I think that his films are great, but I would like to see him be more original because I know that he can be.

Okay let me take a second and ask, why?
Seriously, why do people like Donnie darko?
As someone who was a goth/emo kid (when I was a kid, don't worry I grew up) all my friends loved it. I hated it because I don't fall for hype. I kept getting
>ugh but they time travel!
>you don't understand me or my movie
>it's about accepting death
>muh feels

No.
I understand the movie and the concept of how the director "solved" time travel (by making it a ducking dream, the biggest cop-out around) but the movie, itself, is pure trash.

And this

Movies too, nigga, they sucked ass.

The only ones that were really worth much were the first two because they were comfy as fuck, but then they just divebombed into grimdark young-adult such-n-such, so you're much more likely to notice the flaws and pointless scenes and such and can't excuse it as "just a kid's movie".

Babadook, Donnie Darko, Birdman

Babadook was a huge letdown. Fuck the metaphors, I want to watch a horror movie to be scared.

Donnie Darko is retarded if you actually try to think about it. Hurr Durr I'm gonna let myself die instead of exposing the pedo, saving my sister and mom, and my girlfriend. Fucking stupid.

Birdman was the worst of these three. Pretentious bunch of bullshit. Trying way too fucking hard with the long shots. Do it once or twice for effect. Do it the whole movie, you're a douche. Director had no ending for it either. When a director won't give the meaning for the ending, that's how you know he's full of shit. The best ending would have been BatKeaton shooting himself in the head, crowd cheers, fade to black. Done. Fuck that stupid movie.
>>
>>708068032
>>708068546
They are filmed well but it's not QT who made them good. Also he never credits the stolen films. If you go into his movies knowing that, it makes you think less of them

He hired the top actors and basically stole a script, filmed in good locations and followed current trends. If you see his early work it still has his awful filming style with low tier actors and you start hating all his work.

His movies rest fully on the shoulders of his actors and rip off script.
I mean picture if a good movie like citizen Kaine was redone with Kevin James.

Or picture if a lacking movie with a good idea, let's say, "in time" starred a decent actor like Clint Eastwood in his hay-day -time running out and he's playing slow and steady just barely saving the day at the last second; you'd be on the edge pissing yourself-

I will give him some credit, but being a good director is like being a good expeditior in a kitchen. Your job is to make the final plate look good, but you need no skill if you have good cooks (actors) and good recipes (scripts).
>>
>>708070477

>>
>>708070900
>trying way to hard with the long shots
Seriously don't understand what people didn't like about the cinematography, it was easily the best part of the movie. You do realise that the one shots were in fact symbolic of the theatre setting of the film? The one shots make total sense in the context of the film. I do agree that the film overall was kinda overhyped though.

>>
>2001: A Space Odyssey

I respect how it's influenced modern film, and what it accomplished - but this movie was easily one of the most boring things I've ever seen. It's way longer than it needs to be, nothing happens, and the story leaves way to much open for interpretation.

>Interstellar

Just an overrall mess of a film. Did it look good? Sure. But I came out in 2014, and all movies look good now in terms of CGI. The story was fucking stupid, the characters sucked, and the script overall was just terrible. The only reason it has the reputation is does is because the guy who directed a really great Batman movie als happened to direct it. If this movie was made be M. Night Whatshisface it would have been panned as it rightfully deserved to be.
>>
>>708070877

You want me to put together a critique for all 8 of the Harry Potter movies?

I mean, I could list off some problems. For one, the decision to start creating films before the books concluded led to some awkward choices. Example: they deemed Dobby overall unnecessary when the fourth movie was filmed, and thus cut him out of each movie since, only for him to become a key participant in part of Deathly Hallows, forcing them to shoehorn him in in an awkward fashion (literally "I was walking along and noticed the plot was happening, so here I am").

Pointless scenes I've mentioned; there are plenty of points that are unnecessary for the plot and are just there because "lol majik", which was fine for the first two, but then they started gunning for "serious" storytelling and it just became stupid.

Add to that the various plotholes in each movie, plotpoints where the only explanation is "lol read the books to get it, retard", clumsy editing, weird stylistic choices, and so on. Overall, it rides completely on being adapted from a popular kids' series that people will mindlessly defend to hell and back.
>>
>>708071583

Dude, chill, I'm 30. I get that the movie is about loss and coping with it and turning into a monster towards the ones you love blah blah blah. That's not what bothers me, what bothers me is that I wasn't gonna watch the fucking tthing in the first place but it had like a 91% fresh rating. You're gonna tell me that movie is better than Susperia? Or any Dario Argento movie for that matter? Fuck that shit.

>didn't criticize
I guess I didn't but the anon I quoted did, so I was using that.
I did go on to say, however, that with so much talent surrounding him he needed no talent.

I'll put it this way
He is the George Lucas that has yet to be exposed.
One day he'll have total power and an original script and fuck it all up. (Assuming he actually has faith inhimself)

I did go far bysaying 0 talent, but being hyperbolic is typical.

If you want my honest opinion he is overrated, which is what this thread is about. I think he has some skill.

As for me having that talent, I'm not sure. I'm a good director for the work I do, but I just direct, edit and produce my college's news podcast. All I do is say "action" let them talk, make them do over bad takes, and compile at the end.

I do spend a lot of time over analyzing films, so if one day I make one I hope I don't fuck up, but directors do far less than you think. Again it's my expidition metaphor, if you have good people doing the rest of the jobs, your work is easy. It's actually a great metaphor (not to stroke my own ego, I didn't even come up with it) because an expiditor is the guy who calls out who should be doing what, when, and then then puts it all together.

tl;Dr
He doesn't have 0 talent, but he is highly overrated.
>>
>>708073388

I'm not saying LOTR is an absolute diamond itself, but there's a difference between providing exposition for the sake of worldbuilding (while explaining most or all the necessary plotpoints), and introducing plotpoints with absolutely no explanation.

Example: Goblet of Fire, when Harry and Voldemort's wands connected, ultimately saving Harry from Voldemort and allowing him to escape. Why did this happen? Absolutely no explanation. No mention that it has to do with their "brother" wands at all, not in any of the films to my knowledge.

As a side, they then use the exact same "connection" thing in every fucking dual in the series, despite only the FIRST incident having justification for it.

>>
>>708073966
Haven't seen the movies in awhile but I'm almost certain it's mentioned. In think either by Dumbledore or Ollivader

IMO, considering how high in terms of praise the LOTR are held, they are much more guilty of poor explanation. Not once in those fucking movies is it even explained what the ring does. The fucking ring, the centrepiece for the entire trilogy. Also Gandalf, what exactly can he do and why the fuck did he come back to life? One movie he's soloing a Balrog, the next movie he's struggling to take out a couple of Orcs. Both movies are guilty of poor exposition in regards to the lore of their respective worlds, but when you look at how highly acclaimed the LOTR films are, their far more at fault.

define "pointless" within the context of a piece of art designed to tell a fictional narrative. because if i wanted to be a real ass hole, i could just go ahead and say the whole movie is pointless. hell, i could say being a live is pointless. shit man, i could go and say the entire universe is pointless.

it's old and the scene where the guy fell looked fake af. if it was a good movie they would have invented cgi for it. acting was horrible, developing characters and selling convincing roles does not make for a good movie, it's crap. and they didn't have cell phones. obviously fucking losers.

>casablanca
Ehhhhh

Overrated is a tricky term. I agree with all your others but when someone mentions these three as "the best" it's hard to disagree. Then again, everything but citizen Kaine wasn't a magnum opus of the directors craft

I guess it's like when this happens with music and I have to say
>the Beatles
>rolling Stones
Because even though I love them and their music, they are held above all others as a golden idol to worship.

But seriously
>citizen Kaine
That's the only film that moves me.
The only directing that comes close to emotionally moving is SOME of David lynch's work.

good list regardless.

that film should be burnt like a jew.
>>
>>708075547
the sequences were designed mostly to look and feel like "art" so Kubrick could feel good about himself rather than communicating ideas that helped develop the film thematically or plotwise. Putting major discontinuities into the film that way weakens the structure imo.

This.
The movie itself is good, don't get me wrong.
Kubrick, the auteur perfectionist he is created some actually plausible scientific scenarios and the like, elevating this above the numerous other space movies, however it is also extremely boring. I get shit on for this more than I'd like to admit: the first half hour is boring, slow-burning and could have easily been only five minutes long. The movie draws everything out to preposterous dimensions because of Kubrick's demands and it frankly makes the whole thing way too boring.

In a weird way that kinda makes sense, not so much the generalization of Jews but rather the concept of commercialism. The internet and TV/radio overhype everything, and are the catalysts to word of mouth overhype - which leads to things being overrated. So with this logic I guess it's not the movies themselves that are over rated, instead it's the mainstream media creating a plane of existence where movies elevate to and that is called the plane of over rated movies. Movies that fall below this line can be discovered and embraced later, then become over rated, movies that are great can lose touch with the viewers over time and fall to the level of over rated.

Seems like over a long enough timeline everything becomes over rated eventually.

nah i excluded the jew part and pointed out where over rated comes from, human perception. then emphasized that everything becomes over rated eventually. but if you want to read my post as some anti semitic response when in reality it negated an anti semitic post and tried to apply the remaining logic...

never mind. this is /b/ who am i kidding, you probably just masturbated to a dude with tits. why i'd want to even elaborate a post for you ??? egh my bad Brooooo you win!

I was just a little shocked that in depth analysis of society could come from /b/ and the fact that you got it from anti semitic shitposting

Another major part of something being hyped after its release is the need to fit in with peers. If a majority of a group liked the film others in the group will feign interest in the film that will be carried over to other peer groups so on and so forth causing good movies to be claimed as god tier.

Inversely it can also kill a film's hype by suppressing the minorities interest.

I just assume that's what happened to children of men because that was a fucking brilliant movie but nobody has ever even heard of it

Movie talk!

Who likes horror?

ADDY IN IMAGE!!

Hey, remember us?

Movies with Chat 24/7 MOSTLY HORROR with some Sci-fi/Gore/Cult/80s/Weird Films

Now Playing: Dawn of the Dead [1978]

This movie channel doesn't play everything under the sun. You won't have to sit through pablum like Avengers 2 or Batman movies. There are no cartoons, no musicals, no music videos, no TV shows... just movies. Specifically, It's mostly horror movies. Tons of stuff you have never heard of or seen. There are some sci-fi movies, 80s movies, cult movies, and just bizarre off the wall crazy shit like you have never seen, all mixed in to the horror movies. Over 700 movies that play randomly. None of that polling/voteskip shit, that shit doesn't work - because democracy doesn't work. No safe spaces here either. You can make rape jokes and insult minorities until you run out of edgy things to say if you want. The admins only police things that actually matter. Filmclub isn't here to have broad appeal or as many viewers as possible. It's here as an alternative to all the tired repetitive BS you get from the average stream. 24/7/365 movies most other streams won't play. Even classic XXX. Check it out.

Titanic was a film released to wide audiences. The story line was nothing new, but certainly a popular one. It got by on being a relatively safe movie with good marketing and popular names attached to it.

Pulp Fiction had some of those things, sure. The names attached to it were either waning or rising in popularity. Jackson was definitely no Winslet, and Travolta was definitely no Di Caprio. However, the names (except for Tarantino's) were somewhat irrelevent considering it didn't have a wide release, wasn't heavily marketed and became popular by winning a film festival.

In other words: Titanic became popular because it never had to undergo a critical examination by an audience of aficionados whereas Pulp Fiction became popular in spite of such an examination.

Pulp Fiction is a genuinely good film, and it's a positive that a lot of people like a genuinely good film and would rank it among their favourites. My favourite film is The Big Lebowski, and it has been since the nineties. The fact that a cult following has now turned in to a fairly mainstream following doesn't stop it from being my favourite film because I think the Coen Brothers deserve the popularity and I'm not a pretentious hipster who cringes when other people enjoy what I've always enjoyed.

Many award winning movies were just mediocre oscar bait and did not deserve it

>Spotlight
>History of Everything
>Shakespeare in Love
>Kings Speech
>that fucking 3 hour Kevin Costner movie

By the way, Pulp Fiction is not overrated at all. Good performances by the actors, direction, cinematography and the script are superb.
>>
>>708084593
I agree with you.

Tarantino is the same as Lucas in my books: He made better films when he had less control.

Pulp Fiction is a good film, but it would've been worse if it had featured slow motion shoot-outs, some techno or rap soundtrack and narration that just randomly occurs in the middle of the film.

These days Quentin Tarantino has too much freedom. I still enjoy his films, but I'd enjoy them a lot more if he didn't ignore pacing and setting.
>>
>>708084804
Have you seen the tarantino fan circle jerk over that film.

It is beyond ludicrous good film yes god tier no, tarantino's best work also no
