For starters, their lyrics are cheesy and angsty in the worst way.
Radiohead, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, and even Green Day are some immediate examples of bands that more-substantial lyrics in some of their songs that deal with similar themes -- and I am not even a fan of Nirvana. Furthermore, their beats/melodies often feel contrived. This is more glaring to me when they try to mix rap into their songs. Their ambitions exceed their abilities for the most part with me. I feel that their fanbase is largely composed of edgy kids, angsty teens (the kind that do not get good grades though), and immature adults (the kind that do not want to or are not ready to accept responsibilities.

In all seriousness, if you judge 21 Pilots next to Nirvana, Foo Fighters, yeah they don't measure up. But those "true edgy/angsty" bands are not any kind of golden standard. 21 Pilots are good in their own right, they do interesting stuff, and their lyrics do have meaning. The fact that they're mainstream and overplayed might be skewing our otherwise fair judgement.
