Shit-tier is exaggerated. But it was still lacking considerably. The entire WOR was cramped down because the translator ran out of ROM space because Squaresoft didn't want to pay for 3 MBit cartridges instead of the 2.4 MBit ones they used for the Japanese version.

First of all, it's ME not MM.
ME3 was great, and actually my favorite of the series. The ending was terrible, but it shouldn't have overshadowed the rest of the game, like it did.
ME1 did have a really slow first half, but if you make it through, the second half and rest of the series are definitely worth it.
ME2 is widely considered the best of the three, even though I think it was kind of shallow. The story was weak and it lacked the customization you really want, but it's still great.
I won't say Mass Effect is for everyone, but it's a great series.
