The way I see it, lots of things in life are risk vs. reward. And in the case of one night stands, the risk is ridiculously high compared to the reward, in addition to the difficulty of achieving said award in the first place. To me it just seems as though there are few ways to just have a trans character flow unless the story is about the character dealing with their transexuality in some way.
In a story about people overcoming obstacles of some kind, fantasy stories, et cetera - even expositionally, throwing out someone's sexuality or gender identity just seems clunky. The reader doesn't really need to know that unless it's important to the story.
I read the mortal instruments series for some reason, and a gay character was not revealed to be gay until it became a plot point for his own internal conflict (he was in love with a guy). But just dropping the trans or gay bomb on the reader in the characters typical first description seems like useless information to me, since to imagine that character, I only need to know what they look like, not how they like to fuck. Its like revealing their fetishes or something.
