I think you refer to demographics, which is important. If you want to help a group you need some information first: Who are they, how many are they, what are their problems, what do they need, etc. It has nothing to do with race, just an easier way of differentiating, especially here since the word is commonplace.

Depends on how you look at it, which is why I define it like this. Suddenly they are equal to each other in the actual discussion. I wouldn't use the word in other places than here because it got the stigma it got. Which is why there is a difference between "nigger" and "white trash".
