You're gonna be getting shit for hours, at least at first, if you go to the retail side. Loss Prevention tends to get thrown right into 40 hours a week but that work is mind-numbingly boring (to me at least - depending on who you talk to it's just "easy money" but I go insane when I need to cover their work temporarily.)
As far as the retail stuff I normally do...it's fucking retail, that's about it. There's very little required of you that's stupid or unreasonable, though. There's no stock room with extra stuff, so a customer just has to deal with it if we don't have something they want. We have no itemized inventory, so we don't call other stores to check if they have something. Purchases aren't stored for easy lookup if someone forgets their receipt but want to return something - their problem if they forget. There is a customer service survey, but nobody does it and the store only cares about them if it's particularly angry. There's no script to follow at the register; ask how the customer is doing and smile, that's about as much as they WANT you to do. There's no club card either, so no pushing that on customers.
If you just hate retail work then avoid it. Within the spectrum of retail, though, it's not bad; like I say to customers who ask about how it is, it's pretty chill.

I work from home. I sell on ebay, etsy, and amazon. I also have 4 channels on youtube. And my salary varies wildly from 25k-45k a year. It mostly depends on how hard I want work.
And I don't live paycheck to paycheck. I'm frugal as fuck. For example, If I get a new computer; there is a pretty good chance I already sold 5 in order to get mine free. I do Amazon Mturk basically as much as a full time job.
For those unaware, Amazon Mturk is a service provided by Amazon where you can get a small amounts of money doing HITs - or tasks that computers can't do, but need to be done (such as verifying a transcription, doing academic research, etc.)
Except I bot the everloving Christ out of it. Not doing the work itself, that is impossible (otherwise it would be automated already). I bot finding work, so I can pull in $11-12/hour, easy.
My best week doing it is around $435, and I average about $300.
Do I fucking hate it? Yes. I take probably 40-50 surveys a day, which is fucking awful, but it is fantastic for me and the job market where I live, which is 100% fast food or factories. I have a year of experience doing professional iOS development, but I can't find work where I live, so I do this.

There are these Google HITs that take roughly ~45 seconds to do, and they're 12 cents each. That comes out to about $10/hour just doing those. I can get around 100-125 of them done before they run out, so that's like $12 right there.
Once you figure out how to do it well, and abuse scripts, it can be profitable and a lot less shit. I guess thats just like any job, really, once you get good at it, you're able to maximize your profits.
