Yeah I took up English as an undergrad because the two career paths I considered pursuing were law or education. A lot of prelaw students choose philosophy as their undergrad, but the truth is that English will probably prove more useful in law school.
Anyway, I was accepted into the teaching program, still wasn't entirely sure about it, but my student teaching experience was 10/10 and I knew I had made the right choice.
But an English degree by itself? Yeah...pretty useless lol

I was "promoted" from a Front Service Clerk (grocery bagger) to the seafood department 3 months ago. I had no idea how much of a fucking trainwreck it was back there.
I say "promoted" in quotes because even though at the start my responsibilities and work load increased 10 fold, I received no raise. I'm still working $9 an hour.
All of my coworkers put in the bare minimum for their jobs. The managers don't bother reprimanding them because they know they're not going to be able to get them to do any more work.
My coworkers know I can, will, and have to do the shit they're not doing or else the department will fall apart and I'll look like shit.
I'm the only one who's shown any initiative so of course my managers delegate /all/ of the duties to me.
So that means cleaning, ordering, paperwork, customer service, demonstrations, setting up the case, restocking, working the back room, all of it is my responsibility.
The way my company works is if you work more than 37 hours a week you have to be made a "full time employee". This means they need to give you stock and insurance benefits.
They give me 36.9 hours a week. Every week. They're fucking me out of benefits too.
I am a department manager in all but name working for $9 an hour with no benefits and no opportunities for promotion

It was a tough decision to make because, and I don't mean this to sound conceited, but I'm really, really good at tedious, lawyerly work like drafting motions, pleadings and what not. I've actually represented myself in a few small scrapes with very favorable results. I actually won an outright dismissal once that, admittedly, was mostly luck -- but a bit of strategy and skill as well. I've got a knack for it.
Ultimately what it came down to was that I wasn't prepared to drop a quarter mil on law school when: a.) I might not like the work after all (when I'm dealing with other people's problems) and b.) I might not even get a job at all (it's incredibly competitive right now).
So...teaching it was! I'm happy with my decision. And shit, summers off...
>>707798657

the thing is, I /can't/ stoop to their level. As in, I mentally, psychologically can't. I feel worthless and like shit and get antsy and nervous if I'm not working my ass off on the clock. It's all or nothing with me.
Also, the managers notice my hard work and they love me for it, always telling me how good of a job I'm doing.
The thing is, I can't pay bills with compliments.
>>707798846
They're supposed to give you a raise every 6 months. I've been working at the place for 8 now. I'm considering calling HR at this point.

>>707799427
I mean ask for manager or near manager money (relative to the store). If you're doing all this shit and they're fucking you out of benefits (which might not even be legal with 36.9 hrs) and you're truthfully holding everything together, you can get dollars, not pennies. I knew a guy who was ace at his job (painter at collision shop) but they were paying him shit for a year. He offhandedly makes a comment about leaving for a better place, and the boss personally pulls him aside all buddy like and bumps him up almost double his salary (was bad for a painter, but now good for one).
All I'm saying is that it's fucking 9$. You could make that much at Walmart bucko. If your job is never going to lead to actual managerial positions, then your job is a dead end. Don't take my single comment as arguments for your decision, just realize that is shit pay and it sounds like you're doing an awful lot for the same salary as the old lady who greets you sitting on her ass at Walmart.
>>707799427
My girlfriend worked for a grocery store (Stop & Shop) that treated her like shit. Exactly as you've described where they played with her hours and weren't paying her enough and yadda yadda. The union actually inhibited growth to some degree... it sucked.
She quit, moved to union-less Home Depot, and is so much happier. Full time, benefits, promotion after promotion. She's going to be a manager soon. She actually *likes* her job now.

I manage about 1600 systems. The issues range anywhere from Sage/Quickbooks/Office/AutoCAD issues all Hardware and Peripherals to simple stuff like passwords. Getting a password reset is like a once a week type of request. Even so, I just reset it in AD, my Exchange Management Console, or use the Offline Regedit or other hack tools I have depending on the OS

It took me 9 years to become a teacher. I enrolled in 2006 and graduated 2015. I took a 3 year hiatus in the middle of my studies. I honestly didn't think I'd ever do it at one point, but if I can do it, you can do it.

You're pizza sucks like all national chain pizzas do (papa Gino's, papa Johns, dominos, etc.) but your bread sticks are forever my favorite. We got them a lot when I was kid, so it reminds me of happiness.
