Ok, britfag here, it took a moment to click. We never call the adhesive asphalt. Always bitumen. Yeah OP's tiles are Thermo-plastic which may or may not contain asbestos depending on when they were manufactured. And the adhesive is bitumen. I actually intall identical tiles to these from time to time.

Yeah the bitumen would probably contain asbestos as well as the tiles. I go on a lot of jobs where the contractor has pulled up tiles and I coat the bitumen with a latex cement screed.

the size and colour, for me at least are no indication of age as I can get identical looking tiles off the shelf at my local trade counter.
The bitumen is more of an indicator though as I've not seen such an adhesive used in the 15 years I've been doing this.

Fair enough. Like I said, I've fitted plenty of these (non asbestos) over the years and they look identical. If I see them during a job though I assume they are asbestos. Most houses I find them in are council houses and in those environments there are more pressing health concerns than asbestos.
