Anyone who's played Oblivion or Morrowind before the graphics got super-dated can agree.
In those games you could do basically anything. If you wanted to go fast you could get the soul of a fucking god to power your slippers, making you run fast enough that it blinded you. You'd have to get another item and enchant it so that you get another pair of eyes because your first pair gets fucked from running too fast.
It was endless creativity and freedom. Unlimited content and not the same fucking thing all over every time you play. Also it was challenging apart from Skyrim which you can basically clear on Legendary with your fucking fists.

The best parts of it were the music, story and reality of it. The people were people, they weren't super humans, gods or destined heroes. They were a group of teenagers that had to rely on the powers of creatures that devoured their memories in return for power. The closest thing to a super human was a witch, a female with natural magic ability usually much stronger than those given by a creature.
Of course you could talk about the things like technology being oddly advanced in some way but not in others, a hidden highly advanced civillisation or even the slow change of personality that the main protagonist throughout the story as being odd or awkward. But if you find the theory "Squall's Dying Dream" to be possible then why not, it's only a dream then.

Though the tech I'm talking about is the flying gardens (the bottom 2/3rds is flat out machine to get the thing flying, so I can believe it), the one country with access to missiles (they are a militaristic country) and the space tech (have you seen their city, space is the least they can do).

Deus ex is absolutely god-like but falls just a hair short from perfect because of the braindead AI at some points in the game.

While not a great mechanic, it made complete sense with the world which is where i forgive it. Not great, but consistency with the world was good.
Also meshed well with the Junctioning system because you'd save up 100xUltima for example and stick it to attack for max damage. But if you fought something that wasn't hurt by physical damage (Iron Giants+That super Iron Giant near the end) and wanted to use it, you'd have to sacrifice some damage until you could replenish your supply. Bad example though, a better one would have been Curaga or Life if Junctioned.
I've played other space games, but none quite matched Homeworld's sense of wonder and vastness.

Yeah and the fact that the hardest boss in the game had a one-hit mechanic to your whole party unless you were prepared. You had to start prepping for that either mid game, or pray you finished the Triple Triad royalty sidequest thing in Balamb Garden to unlock them on your ship during disc 4.
Though the reward you get is just a screen saying that you beat the hardest boss in the game. Not worth it for that but totally worth the challenge alone.
