I was setting up the humans as outsiders and naive, the group of them there were a colony from a country impractically far away that had been there for a while. Late medieval tech/culture. The wolves (their immediate neighbor) had been at like maya/aztec level but the slow burning conflict for territory had caused them regress, consumed by their own hatred. A clanish world view in which everyone had a relative that was killed by a human somewhere. The humans didn't think anything of it.

My work has similar side to it when it comes to the creator. Main characters tend to be humans but they end up dating a nonhuman girl, which is rare in my world, not usual like in most similar fantasy. Only I don't let it ruin it. I leave the readers pondering in a situation like: ok, they're together but did they just had an intercourse?
The details would probaply ruin it, there are many people who wouldnt understand and nor they need to. My characters are driven their by own choices, not the readers.

Finding a plausable reaction into something isn't always easy. Like sometimes my dead main characters are brought back from the dead and no one knows why, there really isn't any right or plausable way since shit like that doesn't happen naturally. Like the human warrior who walked from the flames of his funeral pyre and his nonhuman companion could only shrug her head in disbelieve. Only a day earlier she held his bloody and broken remain on her arms crying and now she saw her companion alive and unscathed. The mental impact was too much for her.

I was considering trying to get some psych people I knew to make sure I could throw more correct behaviors into them. that was something I didn't get as far as when I stopped. The rough was that the main character (obviously can't control the player's response) is turned into a female rabbit, their culture starts sucking him/her in. Best friend, the son of a human lord, turns into a wolf, quickly identifies with his new form/stockholm syndrome and starts resenting the time he spends human. Main character's girl friend, turns into a chicken she hates the changes and is trying to force normalcy on them, lots of denial, was going to play it up the isolation factor by including maybe one only chicken NPC encountered. Her younger brother, an initiate priest turns into a tentacle monster, crisis of faith that later is resolved when he does great things that would have been impossible/sees a higher purpose in what happened
