I know with my grandfather's beef cattle, that the cow's will sometimes bawl for a few days after we take their calves off to the stockyard to sell. Either, it's due to missing their calf, or needing/wanting to have their teats milked down. After a few days of not being nursed though, they'll stop producing milk until time for them to give birth again. It's usually when they're about to give birth that a cow's teats will be uncomfortably tight. Sometimes, they're so swollen that a small calf might have difficulty nursing.
