I don't think so. Religion has the power to unify and in turn divide large sums of people. What leads to tensions between people is conflicting ideologies, and that's how it has always been. You don't think the way I do, then you deserve to die.
Religion has served as humanities ultimate catalyst for fomenting violence, simply because it gives people a way to rally. And once two of these congregations clash, the result is almost always violent rather than peaceful.
The common point of view is as you said, that people are impetuously violent and it's just a fact of life. But if you take away religion, there really wouldn't be anything else for humans to rally behind, and they might find something else, but an atheist world would allow far more success than a religious one.

God could have just set things into motion, provide elements the way to interact with each other, design the subatomic forces that build our very molecular universe.

I have another personal ( non-scientific) reason that I'm sure will hit home.
Every human makes their own religion, no matter how much of an "atheist" they are. Some picked feminism, some picked other-kin, even the world's greatest atheists like Attila the hun and the great khan had their own beliefs and rituals. Dawkins, Harris, all of them have a religion tailored to their own wishes.
So long as atheists chose to worship things like feminism or partisan science, they will never truly be free from "religion" just the ones with a "god" and even then...

Maybe to some degree, but religion is way too broad of thing to be attributed only to drugs. Most religious are just compilations of other stories from other older religions, with some variations added to make the story relevant to the times it was retold. People believed in all kinds of shit back in the day, you didn't need drugs to believe that Jesus walked on water or that the Red Sea was split by god to save the jews
