Were they saying this for medical reasons? Biological gender can heavily impact treatments, this may have just been done to rid of any possible confusion for the patients sake (ironically). Besides, many times staff are just going by what they read on the forms. If I got a nickel for every time a staff member came in and mispronounced my name I could almost have enough to pay off the hospital bills. Several different nurses attend a patient at different times, sometimes they will take care of them only once. If staff aren't expected to remember your name pronunciation, how should they be expected to remember your gender identity and gender pronouns.
