First off. Learn how to take care of your dog. Dogs don't want to piss and shit indoors, they do it because you gave it no other option. They need to know what their options are and won't learn them until you teach them.
You have to use positive reinforcement. If your dog pisses/poops indoors and you don't catch them in the act, or seconds after the act, they wont understand why you're diciplining it and it will just think you're beating it for no reason.
Every dog has a 'tell' that lets you know it's about to do its business. Usually something like walking around and sniffing the ground and various objects/spots in your house looking for a good place to go. You have to pay close attention to it until it learns to whine or go to the door or bark to be let out. Dogs usually need to poop 30mins or an hour or so after they eat. Like people, they usually need to go to the bathroom right after they wake up or are taking a nap.
Take him/her outside right after it wakes up and go for a walk. When it goes to the bathroom praise it, pet it, maybe give it a treat and say 'good boy/girl!' So it knows its doing the right thing. You need to be observant and watch your dog. If it's laying around then suddenly gets up and looks like its looking for somthing, sniffing around and what not, take it outside because it's probably looking for a place to go to the bathroom.
It doesn't fucking speak english so it can't just tell you it needs to go out. You need to learn the language its using to tell you it needs to go out.
House breaking a dog takes time and patience and if you give up or deviate from your tactic too much ot will relapse. This shit takes weeks. Even longer if you suck or the dog isn't the brightest. More than anything it is owner error. In addition to what was said above, you need to just take it out every couple hours anyways until it gets the hang of it, then as soon as it goes, praise it and take it back inside

as for OP...i went through that with my last dog. it really is all about consistency. hitting does nothing (I made that mistake) in fact he'll be more likely to do dumb shit. dogs want to please you...but their brains are wired different. you have to try to understand the way they think so you can train them how to act in a way they'll understand. positive reinforcement is so much more effective than negative. for example, if he shits in front of you in the house: clap loudly, say "no" and quickly bring him where he's supposed to shit. then be upbeat and say the command like "go potty" and if he finishes outside or wherever phrase him and give him treats. IF he shits when you're not there, there's no point in scolding him because he literally won't be able to understand. He'll see you're upset but he won't know why or what he can do differently next time.
Patience is key. They say the first 1-2 years is training, and once the dog is 3-5 years old that's the golden years you get to enjoy a well trained companion. Mine's 1 and a half btw. His only problem left is chewing shit when he's bored. also he's clingy af follows me every fucking where. still working on him though

I have a pitbull in an apartment and there's so many factors. for one, I keep him on a regular food/water schedule so I can predict when he has to use the bathroom. Take him out literally first thing when I climb out of bed (even before I use the bathroom), then again before I leave for work, then immediately when I get home, and then again before bed. It's not easy. The only way to make him behave and not chew things while I'm away is keep him exercised (again, harder without a backyard). I try to take him to this open parking lot or a hiking trail with hardly any people and let him run for 20 plus minutes, as often as possible. Every other day is ideal. Sometimes I only have time once a week, and it makes a huge difference. When he's exercised, he's an angel. When he's not, he chews things, has accidents, follows me around the house like a fucking bitch...just....it really helps a lot. especially when they're young, like yours is.
