When they first started to name hurricanes (sometime in the 70s I think?) yes they were only females but after a while they started using male names too. There is actually a pool of names that use in a 6 year rotation. The only time they won't reuse a name is if it was especially devastating, so I don't think we'll ever see another Katrina or Andrew
