A form 7743 isn't sent to the ATF. It's a record that's kept at the dealer for 20 years. In my state that equals not registered. On the BG checks their not submitting the firearm info. Only certain states and jurisdictions make a registry of that information. Some states have handgun registers. Not here.
Depending on your state, just buy private party. Go to a gun show and buy from a private seller, or use armstrader or something of the like. I have at least 4 firearms that I've bought that way and never re-registered them as my own. Just write up a Bill of Sale and have them sign it so they can't claim it was stolen. They're still technically registered, just not in my name.
If you're not dead set on a revolver, just get an 80% AR lower and finish yourself (Literally drill a few holes and it's done). Then the rest of the parts (trigger group, bcg, barrel, etc) you can buy online.

I don't know Virginia's laws but it's a southern state, which would lead me to believe they're probably lax. So you should probably just be able to get something at a gun show. In Alabama you can. I'm in Washington now, where they recently made that illegal without a background check and formal transfer, but that isn't the case most places.

Unless you built it yourself from scratch, it's registered. You may have bought it private party and it's not in your name, but it is registered. Firearms in the US are registered when they're manufactured in the name of the dealer they are sent to. The only way a gun is registered is if your state or local jurisdiction requires registration. Or if your buying an NFA item. Then that's a whole new ballgame. The dealer is responsible for any record of the transaction and a lot of guns are over 20 yo meaning the only records of ownership for a lot of guns doesn't exist anymore. Take one of my glocks for example. Gen2 G22 Atlanta police from 1994. Nobody knows who owns or owned this gun for a damn long time. The records are being destroyed every year and it's very likely that it was never registered in the first place.

Serialized gun, if recovered, would require the police to contact the manufacturer, contact the wholesaler they sold it to, contact the gun store who bought from the wholesale, and then grab the records from that store, which hopefully translates to you, but a private sale or theft would completely destroy this chain.
Registered creates a direct connection.
So you could remove the serial number (which is illegal as fuck) and then it's "untraceable".
Best thing to do would be to get an 80% kit for either a 1911, Glock, or AR-15. Then you build it yourself. Completely legal, no serial number, only record would be the charge to your credit card.

Easiest for an AR-15: The registered part is the lower receiver. An 80% isn't a complete lower because it won't work as it is. You just need to drill a couple holes for the safety detent and such. No serial number since it's not functional as it is. A little legal loophole that's very popular.
