It seems relevant to say that why they weren't a sellout band like Metallica, they DID lose what they started, which was Death Metal in general. If someone asked me to pick an album of what represents death metal, my #1 pick would be Scream Bloody Gore. The same cannot be said about Individual Thought Patterns, Human, The Sound Of Perserverance, etc. Not that they're *bad*, they're just not the top classic death metal albums like Scream Bloody Gore and Leprosy were.

Pretty much. Good bands evolve and set new standards with every new album, and with Death, you hear the change with every new release. I agree with SGB setting the standard for death metal as a whole, but Death knew how to keep their audience interested.

Also, from a guitar standpoint, the guitar, especially on Leprosy, is as good or better in comparison than their newer work. Though playing stuff from The Sound Of Perseverance is pretty fun.
Though there are some good recent releases, I feel on average they pale in comparison to the releases in the 80's and 90's.
