It really depends on what kind bike you want. 250cc and 300cc class sport bikes are great if that's your thing. 650cc standard bikes are always a good starter. They have more power, but it's more controllable; not like a 600cc sport bike.
Good 250's and 300's are the Ninja 250 and 300, and the Yamaha R3. Good 650's are the Suzuki SV650, and the Ninja 650.
Other bikes the consider would be a 250 or 400cc dual sport like a Yamaha WR250X.
Cruisers are heavy, and not powerful. I don't recommend them as a starter bike, but if you must then start at around 1200cc.
