Most places you legally need just under one acre to have a horse. That's not really a lot of land.
As for cost, that will partly depend on how much land you have , more land means less feed cost.
For a pony, not having any pasture to graze, about $800 - $1000 in feed per year depending on what you feed and what price you can get it for.
Other care would mainly be hoof trimming, you can do that yourself if you're competent to do that or have a farrier, about $50 every 4-8 weeks.
routine shots and medication will run less then $100 per year.
I have about 5 acres and probably spend less then $500 per year on my girls.

Not too bad considering their size. Thanks, dude. I appreciate it. I ask for a couple of reasons. While I was going to the music store, I passed by this huge field which had cows, goats, horses. Even for around here it was significantly bigger than most, and it was beautiful. It got me thinking about really wanting a horse.
The other reason is that my grandma has had about 3 acres in NC for 20 years or more with absolutely nothing on it, and I'm really wanting to do something with that land. Of course, having horses would be a given.
