True, but let's be honest too. Most anime is created for children. And yes, I know, there are some exceptions, but we're talking about an audience between 16-20 for the next tier. There are maybe three or four anime's that I would recommend to an adult.
I watched lots of anime when I was way younger, but the older you get, the cringier almost every anime becomes. There should be a turning point once you reach a certain age or there's something wrong with you.
But, let's be honest about this too; I'm happier to see an adult like certain anime than bronies.

then I watched Cowboy Bebop
and i realized hey this is good the plot and the music was fantastic enough to overlook the cliches
so I started hunting down anime that was rated highly for adults. I think I have found like 5 shows that were decent the rest were horrid and I think I lost some chromosomes watching them.

I think you're over simplifying Berserk, you need to read the manga to get the jist of it, it straight up brings the questions of nihilism and evil for a greater good to the table, it's not so much about the characters as it is about showing this reality in an unpleasant way.
Spoiler: In the manga you realize that the apparent selfishness of Griffith is about bringing to life a better world for everyone. He does this with a pat on the shoulder from God itself. But the price he forces everyone else to pay in order to fulfill his dream and at the same time accomplish this godly pursuit could be described as evil. However he does achieve peace but should peace built on blood and injustice be destroyed to bring about more war and destruction? These are questions you can apply to todays real world as well, for instance if you are a /pol/ack you could recognize an analogy with Islam, where if Islam conquered the world, then there would be world peace (as long as everyone is from one sect) but the price to pay would be our humanity. Modern western society has surrendered to nihilism and that may very well be what happens. That is what happens in Berserk as well. It's of course not the most philosophical thing ever, but it does make you wonder about these things.

In Japan, most anime are actually marketed for adults. Usually with higher production value than most American TV shows.
I've been watching anime since I was a kid, but since I've become an adult, I've been watched adult-oriented anime for years (I'm 25 now). There are literally thousands of shows that are not only meant for adults, but are absolutely not recommended for children.

Ergo Proxy and Paranoia Agent are both great series.
Serial Experiments Lain was great and always a recommendation of mine, though maybe a bit much for you.
Others include Noein (despite that awful CGI at points), Red Data Girl, My personal favorite movie Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and most popular Ghibli films... Princess Mononoke is a very close second. I could go on and on but it is hard to give suggestions when I don't know your tastes and limits. Check the first three though at least, pretty cool stuff.

But the thing we were arguing about is that it's silly to generalize about anime and say that what defines anime are a bunch of young cat girl animes or whatever. I could just as well create a "TVshow hate thread" and justify it by saying that all shows are SJW PC bullshit who focus only on showing diversity, interracial relationships and women empowerment while having no plot whatsoever besides the usual soap opera plot. But that would be pointless because there are a bunch of great TV shows out there just like there are great animes. What differentiates a TV show from an anime is simply the visual aspect of reality vs an animated drawing. The content in both genres is mostly shit but that doesn't mean the genre itself is shit.

Having every one of the female characters of adolescent age and older having massive breasts gets old and makes it more difficult to suspend disbelief. I want to be told a story and become enthralled by the story, or at the very least maintain suspension of disbelief. and having cutesy big tits and other sexualization cliches back-to-back to back constantly reminds me of the absurdity of the story. And sex can have a place in story development but convention has beaten it out from a dead horse like glue and stitched together too much with it.
