Omega, for a dive and IWC for a pilots. Out of all my watches the Omega kept the exact second for >6 months and I was using the atomic clock to check it. After that it started to go off a bit but no more than any other watch I had. I like IWC, but for the money a good Omega is a great fucking choice. F1's from that period were cheap toy watches, plastic and rubber with quartz movement. Honestly that heap is where they belong, without the label they would be worthless

Yeah I do some restoration myself. Simple things that I've picked up over the past 10 years of collecting. But I am constantly going to flea markets, antique malls, estate sales, auctions, and etc. I make a good chunk of change doing it too.

You name any american brand and I'm sure at some point I've owned one. But now I'm collecting more of stuff with complications. That's a fucking awesome watch. You know you might be able to take a lot of the surface scratched from the dial off with one of those superfine nail file sticks. But obviously, check the grain of it first. I've seen some 1500/2000 grit polish sticks cheap enough and they won't ruin anything. I can't even find that watch on Ebay fuck.

Both. I can completely service most mechanicals and autos, but I have some trouble with chronos or weird complication movements. Like right now I'm in the middle of a disassembly on a hamilton that uses a split stem and a micro rotor. Super tedious stuff. Working on dials is super hard but rewarding if you do it right. Generally you have to be good with this sort of thing in order to feasibly make good money off of it. Otherwise there's too much overhead coming from jeweler's bills

When I was your age, I'm assuming the picture on the boat was you, I was just starting to take the watch case backs off and look at the movement. I had hardly scratched the surface of watchmaking. I would still call myself only a hobbyist because the experts truly are experts. However, my advice to you would be to just open up the watches you get. Go to estate sales or antique stores and pick up cheap watches or try to find some steals once your brand knowledgeable. You will get familiarized with the movements enough where you can say "hey, that's a nice movement" or "this movement is dirty" and from there just read, read, and read. Look at charts, take shit apart (hopefully nothing expensive), and keep collecting
