Why didn't the people trapped in the towers during 9/11 just grab a table or a desk, jump out while on top of it and jump off of it before it hits the ground?
>>
Physics doesn't work like that /b/ro
>>
That's not how physics works
>>

>>703984321
Not OP but I always think of that, can someone enlighten me on it.
>>
Imagine your traveling at 100 mph in a car and then you jump out before you hit something. when you jump out of the car you are still going 100 mph and hit the ground at that speed
>>
phyiscs that work not like
>>
>>703984357
I'm guessing the upward force you generate by jumping will be nowhere near as close as the force of you falling towards the ground.
>>
>>703984165
Thanks OP, I didn't know I could lose more faith in humanity than I already have until I saw how fucking retarded you are
>>
>>703984165
Because the impulse from jumping is too weak to cancel out those speeds.
It's possible at lower speeds.
>>
so in general you are providing false security that it would be better to jump with something to lessen the impact but intact you are only increasing your weight therefore increasing your speed to hit the ground at.
>>
>>703984419
So they should have jumped off of three desks?

There were no desks in the towers when the plane hit. That's why I think it was an inside job. Too many people would have survived had there been furniture inside.

>>
>>703984528
Now we're getting somewhere. Anyone got bill nyes phone number?
>>
>>703984528
Technically.. if you throw down a 'ladder' of tables beforehand and are an extremely skills jumper you could slow the fall significantly.
>>
What's a humans terminal velocity?
I'm not googling it till you answer.
>>
>>703984165
try that off your rooftop.
>>
>>703984419
No.. That is plain retarded... You are saying that by jumping, you are creating an upward motion... There are 2 reasons why that is impossible:

1. In order to jump, you NEED a stable area. It's like trying to off a flag, on a flag pole. It is moving to fast for it to be stable enough to push off.

2. When you push down, to jump, you are actually just pressing down the desk, which if we want to be technical, makes the desk move faster.
>>
>>703984357
Simple explanation: if you and the desk are falling at the same speed, how are you supposed to push down on it and slow yourself down? the desk can't offer you a stable platform from which to slow yourself down from. if you push yourself off the desk you won't even be slowing yourself down, you might make the desk fall a little bit faster but that's it
>>
>>703984680
So get a desk that's heavier than you
>>
We don't live on a world with Bugs Bunny physics. Read a fucking book.
>>
OP is right cuz if u jump off the desc right before it hits the ground it cancels the vertical speed

>>
Holy fucking shit this is autistic
>>
>>703984760
That doesn't matter. It doesn't matter if the desk is 1KG, or 9999999KG, it is still moving too fast to be a stable platform.
>>
In order for it to work, you'd have to jump hard enough to negate you velocity, which being a human would be 195 km/h. That's not factoring in that jumping off a table in free fall would require even more energy to your jump as it's not braced against anything solid like a floor or the ground. So you'd have to negate both yours and the table's terminal velocity.

If I'm wrong or something, someone let me know.
>>
mV_term is more than the impulse generated from jumping even if you could somehow jump off a table falling at 122mph
>>
because they foolishly believe state propoganda that the buildings were safe
>>
>>703984838
Oh and generating enough force to jump upwards at 195 km/h isn't going to fare too well for your fragile innards.
>>
it's way too negligible of a change. but if you were on an elevator and it was only two or three stories up and went into a free fall? try it
>>
>>703984835
It would be impossible to get a desk that heavy out the window dumbass

>you'd have to negate both yours and the table's terminal velocity.

Let's say SuperMan was to do this... According to physics, if he pressed down enough to oppose the desk falling at 195 KM/H, he would still not be able to jump, because the desk is moving to fast be be stable.
>>
>>703984995
you would be floating in the elevator faglord
>>
>>703984998
You are missing the point. The desk's weight doesn't matter, because the platform is moving too fast.
>>
>>703985121
I can assure you that if you threw me and a desk out of a plane, I could hit the ground first. So if i'm faster than the desk, how can it "move too fast"
>>
>>703985121
Stop being an asshole.
>>
>>703985035
Because Physics. He is correct, if the elevator was large enough, when the elevator, and the human reach terminal velocity, the human would free fall.
>>
>>703985025
Yeah I just thought it over a bit more an all you'd really do is push the desk down rather then gain any significant upward motion yourself.
>>
THERE IS NOTHING TO PUSH AGAINST
THE DESK IS NOT STABLE
YOU CANNOT "JUMP" UNLESS THERE IS SOMETHING TO PUSH AGAINST
>>
>>703985229
The speed at which if falls doesn't matter either! The fact that the desk is free falling, already suggests it's moving too fast to be a stable platform. Even if you fell faster than the desk, you would still not be able to jump.
>>
You need to angle the table so that you slide on it before hitting the ground.

I have looked at all the possible outcomes of the scenario and this is the most likely one

The 9/11 tower (100) is about 100 tall. If you were to jump put you would generate (500) about 500 speed.

Descs has a high surface and will not penetrate air as good as humans do and will only recieve maximun 250 speed on earth.

Humans has a jump speed of 250 speed

250 - 250 = 0 speed

By jumping off the desc right before it hits the ground you get to live another day (24 hours)

That's a lie... First off, if an elevator snaps. Unless you are in a poor area like africa, or cuba, the elevator has a lock. So if a cord snapped, the worst thing that would happen, is you would have to wait for the fire department, in a small dark room.

That guy who keeps saying the table isnt stable is a fucking idiot, or is bait.
If you're crouched on a table in free fall and extend your legs, yes the table would be pushed down but you would also be pushed up. Jumping would slow you down, but by a negligible amount and you'd still die to death.

But what if a large crane is holding up a mattress on bungee cables, in free fall you jump from said desk to mattress, and as your getting lower to the ground jump off while mattress goes back flying?
>>
>>703985763
Also if it was "falling" it would most likely be going up rather than down. Also at the bottom of elevators are usually springs iirc.

I've always wondered why people didn't just stand ontop of the towers, yeah sure it's gonna hurt when the tower stops from free fall ,but surely you stand a better chance?

You are still traveling the same speed, you will still impact the ground at said speed. it would be like being trapped in a free falling elevator, you cannot just jump right before it hits the ground because you are still traveling the same speed.your fucking dead or very badly hurt lol
>>
>>703984165
your jump would have to be powerful enough to negate the terminal velocity you're travelling in. It's impossible to jump that hard.

However, if you jumped out the window on a mini trampoline you should bounce into the air again as you hit the ground, to fall a second time, not at terminal velocity. You will break bones most likely, but survival is more likely.

I'd invest in a mini trampoline if i worked in a tall office building or skyscraper.

I see where the confusion is here.

Let's say that you are crouched down on a surface, we can keep it a desk if you wish, and then jump out of the building. As you near the ground, you extend your legs, pushing the desk away from you.

OP/bait master believes, or wonders, if this means you would be "jumping up," and then gravity will take hold of you and bring you down from a much lesser height.

This cannot happen. If it did happen, you would still die. In order for your direction to reverse you would have to momentarily, at the moment your legs first extend, come to a COMPLETE STOP and then go in the other direction. If this were possible, you would be impacting the table at your falling velocity the moment you pushed. You would splat on the surface of the table as it fell, then your goo would go up in the air a moment before joining the table's splinters on the ground.

However, this is not what happens.

Let's saying you're falling at X velocity, where X is enough to murder you dead. You push against the table with a leg extension as you near the ground. There IS an energy transfer, equal to your leg strength. It transfers some speed to the table, while reducing your velocity; it's negligible, and not enough to make a noticeable difference let alone a life saving one. The velocity transfer is L.

You and the table falling together = X
The table after you push off = X + L = Y
You after pushing off from the table = X - L = Z

Y and Z are both still aimed downward. They're both still falling. They both also only last for a moment. Let's say you push off 20 meters away from the ground. Before the table hits the ground, it starts moving slower, back to X because your initial velocity transfer made it go faster than its terminal and the world seeks to correct that. Your reduced speed will also return to X before you hit the ground, because gravity is still a thing and in 20 meters it will accelerate you back to the speed you were going before.

The desk doesn't matter. The only energy transference comes from the strength in your legs.

If you got stronger legs / rocket boots, that would cause a bigger reduction. However, you have to take into account that the speed you slow down with has to be gradual. If it's too sudden / straight up, that will injure your brain at best, or make you go splat against whatever you were in downward contact in at worse.

That's why when you first release a parachute, you continue to fall down after it opens, that fall slows, and then it's carried upwards. Also why you can't pull your parachute too close to the ground; you'll hit the ground, then your corpse will get lifted up and drift a few meters away.
>>
>>703984165
You need rockets on your desk.
That said... if there was unignited jet fuel on the plane wreck one could totally siphon it and loot parts to make a pressurised tank with outlet then strap up and BOOM across Manhatten to the safety of the nearest water

This is a very very good question OP. I applaud your type of forward thinking, fore I too am a forward thinker. I believe that this is 100% possible. After all, it's not like anyone's ever tried it. >>
>>703990230
At first I thought you were so wrong and ignorant, but then I saw the twist at the end. Good point.

Though, I still don't think there would be an immediate instance of not falling. The person would still either splat from the feet up like a clay man in a reverse Hydraulic Press Channel video (press going up), or they'd give themselves a concussion so bad that they're brain dead if nothing else.

First they have to fall slower, then not be falling, then be going up, then falling again. You can actually skip the going up and the not falling part as long as the falling slower is close enough to a safe speed; e.g. so that falling again + impacting is safe.

You're right though. Insane strength required to make it a viable option. Anyone this super human could probably just stick the landing and doesn't have to worry about jumping to begin with.
>>
>>703990783
Can we start a gofundme to finance the testing you think? I mean think about all the lives we could potentially save and the massive strides we'd make in the physics field. We. Need. To. Run. Some. Tests.

So if they couldnt jump because of the speed, why they dont jump from window to window till they land safe?
Or making some friction with the same building (You know like megaman grinding the wall) it could decrease the speed... So they could jump from the table and land safe.
>>
>>703991145
Maybe if you had two. And a belly in the middle, with some engines underneath them.

>>703991263
This actually makes more sense as far as the physics end of it goes. Nothing wrong with this at all. It's just a matter of having something to keep you against the wall, or making sure there was something to grab onto you. You could do a thousand short falls, catching yourself each time, like vertically placed monkey bars and be fine as long as you didn't miss / tear your shoulder.

The sheer side of the building probably wasn't that convenient though. If you had a rope that could reach your floor to the ground you could slide down it (burn the fuck out of your hands) or rappel down, yeah of course.
>>
>>703984165
Even if you could do that, a human instantaneously reversing their direction would kill them considering the amount of Gs they'd experience.
For actual survival, the desks would need to serve as makeshift surfboards and would need to be grinded on the side of the building to slow the fall.
>>
Firemen should have caught them.
>>
>>703991466
Okay and the butt cushions from the chairs?
>>
It is possible however you will still fucking die.

find an heavy object with the same terminal velocity ( 53m/s ) and jump off as late as possible ( else you'll reach terminal velocity again.)

in best case scenario you can save 3m/s if you jump as late as possible.

now your hitting the floor at 180km/h instead of 192km/h
>>
>>703991558
Butt cushions are known to contain methane that gets trapped in them from people farting. They'd burst into flames as soon as the plane hit, even if the fire was on the other side of the building. By the time people would be considering their escape, there would be no butt cushions.

Now there's a thought
>>
>>703994441
So you're more on board with the lighted fart propellant theory? Lighting a lighter at terminal velocity is a risky maneuver indeed.
>>
Someone did some math about extinguishers and so basically you have about 4000 newtons of force falling at terminal velocity and a fire extinguisher can produce about 200 newtons (pretty sure this was done for in space Btw) and you would need around 20, especially because I was too lazy to actually take the time to factor in the weight of extinguishers and the fact that gases aren't ideal and not being in space makes the force of am extinguisher way less useful so you would never be able to do this considering most floors would have 1 or 2 extinguishers and traversing to probably at least 15 floors would be impossible so fuck off about extinguishers
>>
>>703994827
But not impossible
>>
>>703994637
No because that's retarded
Fuel out of a rocket works because it is a liquid and gets ignited and converted into a gas extremely fast, the pressure of which makes it launch out of the ass end very fast. Farts are always gas. Also your ass doesn't actually act like a rocket because the gas you ignite is already in the surrounding atmosphere its just conenctrated
>>
>>703994915
It basically is impossible because if you had to carry upwards of thirty fire extinguishers and somehow use them all at the same time you would drop them if not for the massive weight but the unwieldiness of that many god damn extinguishers

Assume the average person weighs 75kg.
A computer desk - one of the right shape might work... so lets assume 50kg , made of sheet steel... bit heavy id say but, itll do,
The terminal velocity of an average person is ~53m/s
A desk might have a terminal velocity of perhaps.... 60m/s

In order to jump off the desk you'd need to be falling at the same speed as it.

a man with a 14 inch vertical jumps upward at ~9m/s

Because the desk has less mass then you, it is propelled downwards a little faster, we can say 6m/s, and you are moving 6m/s slower before you hit the ground.

60-6=54

You hit the ground at 54 meters per second. It was a Valiant effort, but all you managed to do was increase the spray of viscera by falling while holding onto that desk.

Its impossible to survive...

mass does NOT change the speed of the fall

regardless of your mass, you accelerate at 9.8 meters-per-second-per-second (minus any reductions from wind resistance) until you hit terminal velocity (or the ground)

for humans, terminal velocity is 53 m/s for a human in a "spread-eagle" skydiving-position. A human in good athletic condition can jump with initial velocity of about 3 meters per second. So if you were falling with a desk, in spread-eagle position, and you jumped off of it right before you hit the ground, you'd still be going 50 meters per second - not a happy ending.
