i classify these two songs as similar, they seem to be along the lines of alternative rock

yours - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asOvnGHwtDU

this guy's - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ctgv4hBgGao

i rarely listen to this type of genre of music, it is not even a personal preference for me. objectively speaking, your choice of song is bland and boring compared to the second guy's choice, which is all around decent and more distinct than yours.

do you agree to a certain extent?

Let me explain the rules here

>there are no good Murican composers, only jews flooding the market with crap
>England is the home of good "modern" (60'+) music, Germany and Italy before that
>Your music means nothing to other people, like you don't care about theirs
>All you want is recognition for your taste, you will only get it from people with the same taste, like you look for artists in other people's lists that you like
>while you were reading this I was fucking your mum
>>
>>703868032
you don't think there is at the very least a hint of objectivitiy when concluding upon whether a song is "good" or "bad"?

come now man, it isn't always purely subjective
>>
>>703866793
allow me to enlighten you

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ReIQfQJub3w
>>
>>703868324
Not your op but...
Its always subjective. Imy a professional musician of 13 yrs and playing for 23. I love truly shitty songs sometimes. But there is definitely a lot of gray area.
>>
>>703868324
i think it is. like you cant help what kind of vibrations make your ears feel good. and while we could debate all day about whether the lyrics have meaning or subsistence(whatever that even means, like a song thats just fucking edgy as hell could really mean allot to someone if it reminds them of something or someone important to them) it really just is up to what you like
>>
>>703868251
I don't really understand how. The thread just said post music you're listening to/music you like, and they are. He's saying that what some people are posting is wrong or invalid, or maybe he's trying to say it should just be stuff that you know everybody likes? I don't really know how it can be taken any way other than he doesn't like the music that's being posted.
>>
>>703868324
You're right and wrong, I agree because I look for a level of complexity and variation, and even new things. But on the other hand, "good" hasn't got a strickt definition, defined by the international council of definers or w/e
>>
>>703868470
If you love it then the song isn't shitty mate. Post some of your music.
>>
>>703868324
i think it has to do with what you grew up with. i listen to the same music my parents listened too in the car and if they had shitty music taste i do too i guess
>>
>>703868470
>>703868517
It has to be objective at least in part. If I hammer away at a keyboard randomly, no beat or rhythm, dissonance everywhere, no one is going to want to listen to it (or at the very least, a vast majority won't). Like the one man said, you can't help what kind of vibrations make your ears feel good, and by the same token, what makes them feel bad. While there is obviously a lot of gray area, there are some elements of music that are required for a song to be "good." How far that extends is up to the individual.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdEvL6jxUYA
i love music about being white trash
>>
>>703868834
well yea, youve gotta have cords scales and proper rhythms and all that but i think objectivity stops there

you see, those who believe music is mainly subjective are people who they themselves are predisposed to view things with subjectivity for the most part. if you believe this to be untrue, please say so.

it is true, you can objectively observe and conclude upon if a music is of higher quality, or in this case, "better" than other songs, to a certain extent. when i listen to music, i tend to focus intently on the melody as if I were problem solving without any bias.

there is objectivity to it, but i do agree it is not something relatable to that of concrete science. in other words, purely objective.

>>
>>703869180
wait is this that amy winehouse song
>>
another thing i would often do when listening to music is to ask myself this

would other people objectively like this music, even if it is not their personal preference at all? and thus, the analyzing begins, and i come up with "what is more correct"

this is how we judge to see if a song is objectively better than another song. "is it more correct?"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnVa9YSjEr4
>>
>>703869666
this shit right here. half the reason people bother themelves with what good music is is because they think other people give a shit what they listen to. they dont. noone thinks youre a loser because you like the band that middleschoolers listen too, they think youre a loser because you give people shit for liking what they like.
>>
>>703869666
again, it seems like you are one to read things subjectively

when i think to myself "would others find this objectively good even if it is not something they would preferably listen to" i am in the mindset of problem solving, learning. trying to solve the problem i've questioned myself, if it is possible.

not concerning myself on a more emotional level, as you've implied it seems. like a perception thing

"err, will they think im weird and have bad music taste if i show them this type of music...?"
>>
>>703869680

what the fuck is vevo? like why does this one company have the rights to so many songs?

>>
>>703869869
it's a funny thing, trying to hack at an issue that admittedly seems unrelated to rational logic and reason, in this case music.

but there is objectivity to it, there is indeed.
>>
>>703869869
You're not wrong. If you played noise for more than a few minutes a normal random crowd would be annoyed.
>>
>>703869882
Dude, this is pretty good. Needs more treble I think. Certain parts are drowned out.
>>
>>703868324
From a musician's standpoint, yes music can be objectively good or shit at least from a performance standpoint. As far as songwriting goes, it's been established for many many years what sounds good. It's hard to (mostly) follow the rules while still being original and that's the gold standard of good music to me. There's a lot of stick-it-to-the-man anti-music (punk, metal, tool) but it's garbage if you ask me.
>>
so if i have shit music taste what do i do about it? i jsut cant stop liking what i like
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Kk4vkKP48Y
>>
>>703870022
and a good portion of music can be just as memorable as that of random noise in the background, while others are distinct and complex.

this will not stop from people having a preference to that random, boring noise in the background, but because it is a personal preference doesn't automatically mean "hey, music is entirely subjective because I like this song, while you like that song!"
>>
>>703869882

>>
>>703870132
You don't have to stop liking what you like, but you can expand your tastes. Find some songs that you like that are on the fringes of your genre, and explore songs that are similar to that. Keep doing this and you'll slowly start to assimilate more genres of music entirely.
>>
>>703870258
then why do people bother to tell me my music sucks

>>
>>703870201
this would be allot better if his voice wasnt made to be so scratchy
>>
>>703870348
BECAUSE I WANT PEOPLE TO LIKE ME SO BADLY
>>
>>703870290

it depends on who is saying that to you and why.

are they subjective and just plain dislike your song because it is not a beloved preference of theirs, or are they objective and dislike your song because it is outright garbage after analyzing your song?
>>
>>703870290
If you don't want people to judge you as much on your musical taste, learn to articulate exactly what it is about the music that makes you like it so much. "I know it's not for everyone, but I just really love how this artist _______." Then people will just shrug their shoulders and go "ehh, I guess." They still won't want to listen to it, but if you're confident in your taste, no one will be mad at you for it.

that's the wonderful thing about things like this for individuals like myself

we argue and converse with one another not so much to share something with those random people you've had to explain and argue with, like you've won something or you've proved a point to them, but more along the lines of being able to affirm yourself the issue at hand

using others as a means for an end, in other words. i gained a better understanding of objectivity in music with this conversation with random people here, i was intriged and learned more for myself.

i dont know about you, but it seems like people here are very high strung in assuming everyone, or at least the majority are more concern with what others think on a more emotional and subjective level.

see, you've given me something to think about, so i can find the "more correct" answer to this question that seems to be gray. thank you

Woah woah, you really think Plant and Young have bad voices? I absolutely love their voices.

If that is you singing in the videos I think you have a very nice voice.

"Nice"? It was always kinda shrill and whiny. I still love it, but it was a bit "much".

yes, it is important to understand how others will percieve you in the way you express yourself, being self aware can be an advantage.

in this case however, i'm rambling over trivial matters like objectivity in music and the perceptions people have in general towards most things in life.

so its marginally acceptable
>>
>>703871595
I meant "objectively " their voices are high pitched and nowadays considered whiny. I love their voices because they MEANT what they sang. Intent over rules "perfection". I love their voices but can't stand Rush guys voice. What's with that?
>>
>>703871683
i think you arent very self aware at all actually. your over use of what you probably think are "big smart guy words" just makes it seem like youre trying to come off as smarter than everyone and instead you just come off as an asshole
>>
so i keep hearing about vapor wave and im curious as to if its actually any good, could someone post an example?
>>
>>703871786
Not op, but you're the asshole. The only "big smart guy words" were already used by others in this thread. He's being analytical, which is what we are talking about.
>if you get confused listen to the music play
>>
>>703871782
I don't know man. I think it is an acquired taste. At first I didn't like it either, but I grew to like it the more I heard it. Kind of like beer.
>>
>>703871786
actually my vocabulary isn't extensive at all, i did this one little test that gives you a rough estimation of your level and amount of vocab you possess and i got only around 6600, which is equivalent to that of a 10 year old child in the US

i type what is in my mind passively, but slow. the words come as they go it seems.

Totally like beer. And I have lots of bands I didn't like at first.

Is English not your first language?
>>
>>703871993
>>703871937
big words was probably the wrong way to phrase it. its this way you speak like youre writing an essay instead of having a conversation. its very condescending
>>
>>703871786
but hey! saying what you said about me can be contradictory on your part by assuming whether or not I am self aware based on my use of diction

i loathe those who consider themselves as intellectual, like the guys who study hard in english classes and talk all college sophisticated
>>
>>703871595
God bless America and Neil Young but it sounds like someone attempting to drown a cat, realizing the basin is empty then declawing it by hand before bludgeoning it to death every time he sings

youre doing it right now. can you not tell the difference in your word choice and syntax?
>>
>>703872076
I think you are just insecure my friend. People can use whatever fucking words they want. Sometimes they can be used in place of what would normally take several words to say the same thing, that is why we have so many words.

Got it. Like making it more formal and complicated when it should be a casual conversation. Still, it's trying to be objective about "taste". People like dogshit sometimes for no good reason.
>>
>>703872202
I think it is pathetic you give a shit about which words someone uses.
>>
>>703872207
i think everyone on 4chan just kinda talks like that. it bugs me too
>>
>>703872202
yeah, my use of diction. i think that is what you call it, a teacher once used that term "your diction" pertaining to how you use your words and construct them, idunno

There's never been a more honest voice.
>>
>>703872202
Also, I'm not texting you to come to my house and gangbang my little brother. I'm communicating on an underwater Bolivian basket weaving forum. A bit of formality is necessary.

That is only your perception. As to why you would care about word choice is beyond me. When you call someone stuck up, or condescending, it really only makes you come off as insecure.
>>
>>703872545
i dont like it when some fucking nerd talks down to me and acts like his fuckin "articulate intelligent speech" makes him better than. even if he doesnt say it its implied. the way snotty ass rich people talk

this. this is the point im trying to get across. the uppity bitch talk. and of course everyone on 4chan is a pseudo intellectual so they will all agree and defend his bullshit while the fucker laughs away
>>
>>703872645
btw, im interested, what is your background? i'll share mine if you share yours, i think we could have a somewhat similar "environment if im correct in my observations about you

Cool. Singer seems to be who Duane Allman would have grown into.

Hey guys, you know what would be cool? Let's go into a thread about music and take a dump in the middle of the floor. Then we can argue about who took the best shit.
>>
>>703872645
Like I said, it only appears that way. Probably because you are insecure. Truly, why do you care? Anyway, if this ever happens in real life, and someone tries to use a "big word"; just ask them what it means. It can assure you 90% of the time they won't be able to give you an accurate description. Their rage meter will also rise and it will impair their ability to think properly. Just stop caring man, it really is meaningless at the end of the day.
>>
>>703872645
>>703872874
Now before you respond to this, if you think he used any big words in here, he didn't. Another tactic you could deploy is asking him what these so called observations are. Just play the game when you need to bro.
>>
>>703872815
and the worst damn part is he will get away with it. he will keep talking like this to other people like the stuck up fag he is and theres nothing they can do about it because if you critize someone for using intellectual diction theres no way to do it without seeming like youre just stupid and mad the other guy is smarter than you and its fucking horseshit.
>>703872874
yes you guessed it i grew up white trash with drug addict parents some fine observations you got there, betcha feel real proud of yourself for figuring that out
im not stupid though, i graduated top of my class, granted thats not much of an achievement in rural georgia but i had a 4.2 gpa and im studying to be a chemical engineer
>>
>>703872955
and so is your comment, my friend. this entire situation in of itself, including my own comment, is inherently meanigless at the end of the day

so what do we do? do we scrape all this nonsense and only focus on things that are practical, things that actually matter?

no! we continue to do these meaningless things, because it really is meaningless at the end of the day.

as long as you're aware of this truth, i say it is fine
>>

how do you look her in the eyes and say infant annihilator

No, unfortunately it isn't. I am trying to help console an anon you're trolling into frustration. And why? Possibly only because you wish to be a faggot, I would not say that I am surprised if that were the case, taking into consideration we are on /b/. But if you must attempt to put yourself on some sort of high horse to feel better about yourself, that is your right. It is also our right to call you out on it.

You could start by using punctuation and capitalization so we can read what you're writing.

Pretty easy. If you can't read what he wrote you must be an illiterate faggot.
>>
>>703873461
i can read what he is writing, it is clear to me even if it is improper

i think it is worse if you believe that you will have difficulty in understanding something because it is slightly grammatically incorrect, like not having a punctuation here and there.

but when it goes onto straight up incoherent gibberish, then yes! use some grammar!
>>
>>703873231
How do you tell your grandma you just listened to three trillion bass drum hits in five minutes?

>trigger warning
>>
>>703873461
you know i never got why we capitalized the first letter of a sentence, like i get it for proper nouns, but why sentences, you just had a period telling you a new sentence is starting, and yea i know i need to work on punctuation, always been a weak spot for me but i just dont uses ' because i feel like everyone understands your contraction so its a waste of time

but the question is, is it "hard" to read what you just quoted of him?

that is the point here, thank you. so now it seems like it is more along the lines of convinence.

plus it seems like you are attemping to roast him based on that, with this you left yourself wide open for a roast too.
>>
>>703873913
If that is the case, I feel bad for you. It was very easy to read. If you found it somewhat difficult, I can only recommend you read more.
