Ultra-niche metal bands that conform to their chosen sub-genre are super lame, and it's usually only ever the bands that pioneer the innovative sounds in the first place that are even worth listening to in said niche sub-genre.
Celtic Frost are a perfect example of original metal worth listening to. Then you have 20,000 bands that all try to sound like Mayhem or Cannibal Corpse and just oversaturate the genre. Doom Metal has been doing this lately too.
My personal favorite is original hard rock that creates a gray area bridge between rock and metal, early Pentagram for example.

Bloody Sabbath activated the music glands in my brain 10 or so years ago. Of all the Sabbath albums I've listened to countless times, this one has the easier replay value for me. I've hit Volume 4 relentlessly over the decade and I have to give the songs a break for at least a month or so for the listen to sound fresh and even remotely enjoyable to the first time.
I've kind of been spending the last two years scratching at obscure proto-metal on the internet and classical just because I have to feed my ears with fresh rock every so often.

Oh man Paul Chain is the shit; Vivid Eyes, Armageddon, Way To Pain, he has such a catalog of diverse, eclectic weirdness, he's a treasure trove of a musician.
Park of Reason (2003) is pretty good album of his, it's more modern and primitive, like a bleaker version of Saint Vitus.
