No, really. Trades are where it's at. There is a severe labor shortage currently, that is only going to be getting worse in the coming years. Meanwhile everyone can fucking type, or learn to code these days, and the world only needs so many experts of Shakespeare or Adam Smith. White collar jobs are the ones most at risk of being outsourced today. What blue collar ones there still are--and there are a lot--are ones that cannot easily, or cheaply be outsourced.
I'm a machinist. Mostly what I do is repair or make new parts for shit that needed fixing yesterday. Sure, they could get the work done in China much cheaper, but while they are waiting several weeks for it to arrive, they are losing more than they are saving. I'm not getting rich doing this, but I am living comfortably.

It could pay off big. If you learn the right shit. Want a job writing Java or Python, well you're gonna be competing with millions of Indians, who may do a shittier job than you'd ever dare to do, but they'll do it good enough and cheaper.
You want job security as a programmer? Learn a language no one writes new programs for, but that there is still a lot of legacy code that needs maintenance. Everyone who wants to program learns the fad languages of the day, and they are the ones who struggle to find work. The guy who can write in some obscure language that no one would dare propose to write new software in, is the guy who will always have a job. He may not have as wide of a selection of potential employers, but his potential employers will value him, and keep him happy, because they too don't have a wide selection of potential employees.
Also, learn C. Love C. It's here to stay. Having a background in it looks more impressive on a resume, than not having one. Any point you can give me against C, while true, is still a point that the guy looking at your resume isn't going to consider, because he probably doesn't fucking know, or care how shitty C actually is. The same is true of C++. Master at least one of them.

Getting back to machining ,most of of is done by computers nowadays. The thing is most of the kids who're going to school to learn it, are focusing completely on CNC. I do a little CNC, but I started in manual operations, and that's what I still do mostly. That's where the biggest shortage is right now too.
Plus imo it's a lot more interesting. With CNC coming up with a program is interesting, but beyond that you're just loading and unloading parts all day, pushing buttons, and watching the machine run. It gets very boring and tedious.
Employers also see manual operators as being more skilled, which is somewhat true. You really trade one skillset for another though. In manual operations you have to think more about what you're doing, and you end up having a better understanding of what's actually going on. On the other hand with CNC you can do shit easily, that would be difficult if not impossible, or take much longer to do manually, but you are reliant on a computer to do it for you. That kind of encourages you to take that computer for granted, and let it do your thinking for you. When something goes wrong you could be extremely fucked.
