There were thousands of people who watched the planes crash into the towers. This wasn't something that happened out in the sticks. It happened in one of the largest and busiest cities in the world, and an area that gets a significant amount of traffic every single day.
For argument sake, lets pretend it was an inside job. It would make far more sense to physically crash planes into the towers and Pentagon, than to attempt this convoluted, and poorly thought out dumb-fuckery that Truthers claim is how it went down. They were designed to collapse in the manner that they did. As tall as they were, getting hit by a plane accidentally wasn't exactly a far fetched concern, but the possibility of getting hit by a tornado, or simply catching on fire was probably what the engineers had in mind as being the most likely scenario. The reason that they wanted them to collapse like vertically in the case of such an event, is because had they fallen over horizontally instead the destruction, injury and loss of life caused would have been far worse.
At the very least that would have caused a very large, and economically significant section of the city to burn. Look at how much difficulty they had fighting the fire that did result from the event. The city's fire and rescue services were already pushed beyond the limit of what they were capable of dealing with.Now spread that out over a much larger area. Had it been much more widespread, it would likely have raged out of control, until enough additional rescue workers and equipment could be brought in to pick up the slack.

Even when buildings do collapse, they never collapse perfectly like that, ever. Take for example the oklahoma city bombing. The building had a huge chunk taken out of the base and partially collapsed. It didn't come down completely and evenly.
